MU Syllabus Guidelines and Requirements

Course syllabi should:

  • be neatly typed and clearly organized
  • contain the course title and number
  • list credit hours
  • include course prerequisites
  • include class meeting hours
  • include class location
  • include the instructor's name
  • include office hours, phone number, and email
  • include course Web site and/or courseware access Web address
  • include a clear course description
  • includes specific learning outcomes or objectives
  • an indication of which program-wide learning goals are addressed by the course
  • lists any assigned text(s) or reading materials, including supplementary
  • addresses the instructor's teaching philosophy
  • includes a course schedule that includes at least some information abut each class meeting date or weekly focus
  • explain important course policies (attendance, participation, missed exams...)
  • addresses academic dishonesty and clarifies related expectations
  • includes information about accomodations for students with disabilities
  • discusses grading policies
  • discusses available support services (tutoring, supplemental instruction)
  • indicates how the instructor will communicate cancellations due to illness and/or weather
  • For courses included in the General Education Program
    • the designation of the course as part of the General Education Program should be clearly stated
    • there should be learning outcomes listed related to the General Education program goals. You can find more detailed guidance regarding the learning outcomes associated with our Mansfield General Education Program online.
    • artifacts that can be reviewed by colleagues as examples of student learning be clearly identified
