Joni Oye-Benintende. November 2 to November 22, 2015
Opening Reception: November 12, 2015. 4-6 pm
Joni Oye-Benintende is a ceramic artist creating sculpture and pottery forms, firing primarily in raku and sawdust. She has exhibited in the U.S. and Japan, including juried exhibitions at Baltimore Clayworks, Northeast Pennsylvania Biennial, Goggleworks, and solo shows at the Sykes Gallery, AFA Art Gallery, Gallery Q and Genkan Gallery. Joni is currently chair of the Art Department at East Stroudsburg University of PA where she teaches ceramics, sculpture, and basic drawing.
"The constant theme throughout all of my work is the concept of solitude and aloneness and the contemplative state that they engender. Whether by choice or by chance, these essential states contrast with loneliness and the existence or non-existence of tension among them is communicated in many of the pieces. Modern society largely minimizes the necessity of solitary contemplation to the point that many people do not know how to be alone, much less use the state of aloneness productively. It is my hope that my work serves as a filter through which the viewer can enter their own contemplative space to tell their own story."

Mansfield University's art gallery - in the newly-constructed Allen Hall - is committed to fulfilling the mission of the university: scholarship, service, culture and character. Thomas Loomis, our benefactor, with his unwavering foresight, embodied all of these ideals in his tenure as both Gallery Director and Professor of Art. Therefore, the Mansfield University Foundation formally designated the name of "The Loomis Gallery" to honor Professor Loomis's perseverance and dedication to Art at Mansfield University.
With your help, we can achieve our goal of nurturing a constant cultural presence for professional artists and promoting the arts for the enrichment and enjoyment of all those who live and work in our region.
