Article 5: AARP Tax-Aide Program

The AARP Tax-Aide Program prepares income tax returns for the local community with special attention to people over the age of 60 with low income.

The volunteers prepare income tax returns at the Mansfield Senior Center on Wednesdays and Fridays for three hours.
This is Mansfield University’s fourth year volunteering through the AARP Tax-Aide Program. The first two years, tax returns were filed by paper. The past two years, tax returns were efiled, or filed electronically.
The program prepares income tax returns from mid February until beginning April.
“It’s considered work experience and is highly regarded by potential employers, because besides demonstrating employable skills, it’s also community service,” Mary Jane Dugan, the advisor for the program, said.
AARP Tax-Aide Program volunteers includes: Katie Haas, sophomore studying Business Administration emphasis on Accounting; Joyce Nichols, retired Mansfield University staff member; Ralph Uhrick, freshman studying Business Administration with a minor in Leadership Studies.
“You get a chance to meet so many different people all with different tax situations. It is an excellent learning experience and I found it very rewarding,” Haas said.
According to Dugan, the volunteers have filed about 40 efiles this year.
“Everyone I have helped is so appreciative for this program. I also learned a lot by providing this service,” Nichols said.
All the members plan on volunteering next year.
“My overall experience was very satisfying. I’m glad to be part of a program that benefits the community,” Uhrick said.
The AARP Tax-Aide Program looks for volunteers in the beginning of November. Any college student can volunteer. “I would recommend students to take part in this program, especially Accounting majors. They will benefit from it when they begin preparing their own returns,” Nichols said.
The program does include training. The training process uses training resources provided by the Internal Revenue Services. There is at least 60 hours of training, plus three qualifying exams.
If any students have any questions or is interested in volunteering, they may contact Mary Jane Dugan at mdugan@mansfield.edu.

 Application for Graduation Form

Plan to complete your intent to graduate form one year before graduation.  You will not be penalized in any way if you take longer than one year to actually graduate!  So if you plan to graduate Spring 09, your intent to graduate should be submitted by the end of this semester, [which is rapidly approaching].  Your intent to graduate form triggers correspondence from the Registrar’s office giving students guidance regarding courses still needed to complete all graduation requirements.  This is an important time to have a complete and accurate list of remaining graduation requirements; it allows students two semesters to complete their work.  Ultimately, students must advocate for themselves and not overly depend on their academic advisor.

The Application for Graduation form can be found on the Registrar's website, click on the link, Forms.
