Jerry Mattis Scholarship Fund Established

In Jjerry mattisune 2014, the class of 1964 will be celebrating 50 years since their graduation from Mansfield University. Reunion years are a good time to reflect on the experiences one had at college, reminisce about the lasting friendships made, celebrate with those who are still with us and honor those whose memory we still hold close. One such friend and MU alumnus is 1964 classmate Jerry Mattis. Jerry played football at Mansfield and became his team's Captain his senior year. He was known by many as a leader by example both on and off the field.

Last year, as Jerry's friend and former roommate, Terry Manning, looked forward to his 50th reunion he began to consider ways in which he could show support for the exceptional opportunities Mansfield afforded him and how he could help afford future students the same opportunities. As a result, Terry established the Terry and Michele Manning Athletic Scholarship Endowment. As a student he was the recipient of a scholarship his senior year which was instrumental in his obtaining his degree at Mansfield. Terry knew that this was the same leadership and support of future Mounties that Jerry would have also displayed at his 50th reunion next year.

That is why Terry and Jerry's friends and family, widow Rebecca (Mattis) Osborne, Christina Mattis, and Jeffrey Mattis have paid tribute to Jerry's lasting legacy and the leadership he exemplified through his life with the establishment of "The Jerry Mattis Scholarship Fund" at Mansfield University Foundation. This fund will assist future generations of Mansfield University student-athletes in their quest for knowledge, understanding and productive skills. This is an opportunity for those of us who gained so much from Jerry's friendship, leadership and mentoring to establish this fund as a permanent reminder of the pursuit of excellence, which he instilled in those who were influenced by him.

Mansfield University Foundation Announces the Establishment of the Dr. H. Michael Galloway Jazz Endowed Scholarship Fund

In May 2013 Mansfield University celebrated the unprecedented Commitment to jazz at MU when after a distinguished thirty-three year tenure, Dr. Michael Galloway, a cherished member of the MU Music Department, retired. Dr. Galloway was an educator, mentor and friend who dedicated over three decades of his life instructing and inspiring students, colleagues and friends.

Dr. Galloway's leadership and service were critical to the success of Mansfield University's jazz program, developing one of the premiere jazz ensembles in the state and region. Dr. Galloway conducted the award-winning MU Jazz Ensemble, which has performed at major festivals, conferences and conventions. However, perhaps the most notable aspect of Dr. Galloway's legacy is the rich and productive lives of his graduates. He provided students with a deep understanding of the history, culture and performance practices of jazz and improvised music, gave them tools to pursue their individual artistic growth, and prepared them for excellence in their chosen careers. The best representation of his influence at Mansfield University came last spring when more than 75 alums returned to participate in the jazz reunion concert.

In honor of his impressive list of achievements friends, colleagues and alumni established the Dr. H. Michael Galloway Jazz Scholarship Fund as a lasting legacy for the contributions made by Dr. Galloway. Once endowed, this fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance for future generations of talented music students interested in developing their artistry as a jazz musician.
