This course is a survey of American writers from the 17th century to the present. Authors may include Bradstreet, Poe, Dickinson, Chopin, Williams, Ginsberg, and Morrison. Prerequisite: ENG 1112 or ESL 1112. This a core course in the English B.A. Literature and Culture concentration and the B.S.Ed. in Professional Studies – ENG track. It also counts in the Approaches to Knowledge: Humanities category in General Education.
ENG 3331-01 Civil Rights Novel

An examination of recent American novels, and one film, based on or influenced by events that occurred during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Students will discuss the literary techniques the authors employ, how the authors choose to portray the events and the people involved, and what can be learned from reading such works. Students will develop critical reading skills and a greater knowledge of a significant era of recent American history as they read, discuss, and write about a selection of American civil rights novels. Authors include Ernest J. Gaines, Bebe Moore Campbell, Anthony Grooms, and Spike Lee. This course is an elective for the English BA, the African-American Studies minor and the Women's Studies minor. It also counts in the Approaches to Knowledge: Humanities category in General Education.
ENG 3332-01 Nature Writing

Based on reading, observation, and experience, students will write creative non-fiction prose about nature and discuss each other's work. The course will deal with such issues as the importance of place, the role of science in personal responses to nature, the nature of Nature, and the meaning of "nonfiction" in writing. Prerequisite: ENG 1112 or ESL 1112. This course is an elective for the English BA and the Creative Writing minor, and as a Themes: Strand 2 course in the general education program.

This course teaches students to write for various purposes in professional contexts. Particular attention will be paid to issues of audience awareness and style. Students will write texts for various contexts, including, but not limited to, letters, resumes, memos, press releases, reports, analyses, and grants. Prerequisite: ENG 1112 or ESL 1112. This course is required for ENG B.A. majors. It is not a general education course.

COM 2210-01 Intro to Public Relations

Study of public relations and its role as a management function that develops relationships between organizations and their publics. Principles, theories, and practice of public relations will be examined. Ethical considerations and social media impact are considered. This course does NOT count as an elective in the BA English - Professional Writing major, but it is a prerequisite for COM 3320 Public Relations Writing, which does count.

This course will familiarize the student with various forms of public relations writing and enhance their skills in written communication. Students will produce public relations material for both traditional and digital media outlets. Emphasis is placed on message design, strategy, audience analysis, and communication channels. This course counts as an elective in the BA English - Professional Writing major. Prerequisites: Take COM 2210 Intro Public Relations Writing.
COM 3336-01 Business and Professional Communications

Topics include presentations, technology, interviewing, writing, and interpersonal and group communication in a simulated business environment.
