Welcome
Sending your son or daughter to college can be a stressful time in a parent's life. While at Mansfield University, your child will encounter many opportunities to become involved outside of the classroom. It is important that you, the parent, be educated about the enriching experience that your son or daughter will find by being involved in a fraternity or sorority at Mansfield University.
Sororities and Fraternities have been a part of Mansfield University for decades. These organizations are rooted in founding principles that foster academic achievement, leadership, community service, and life-long friendships. Fraternitities and Sororities are groups of men and women who come together to form a personal network of individuals with similar ideals, interests, and a mutual pursuit of a well-rounded college education. Advantages include:
- A support group to help make the adjustment to college easier.
- Ability to network with students in various academic disciplines, courses, etc.
- Scholastic resources to help students achieve their academic goals.
- Leadership skills acquired through hands-on experience.
- Encouragement to get involved and maximize potential on campus.
- Opportunities for active participation in community service projects, campus events, and leadership programs.
- National research has shown that involvement in sororities and fraternities increases students' chances of graduating from college, are more pleased with their collegiate experience, and are more likely to remain at the same school that they started at.
- Membership in a sorority or fraternity is for a lifetime.
Why should my student join a Fraternity or Sorority?
At Mansfield University, we take great pride in our organizations and all that they stand for. College can be so much more than just classes and homework; it is also a time for growth and development. Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) can foster one's education through many ways.
Long Lasting Friendships
One of the most mentioned aspects of FSL is the friendship that exists between members of a chapter. These relationships go beyond ordinary friendships to become like that of a family. Joining a Fraternity or Sorority gives your student the opportunity to meet people and make special friendships that will last a lifetime.
Academics
Academics are important in our organizations, and are consistently promoted by chapters from recruitment to graduation. The resources that Fraternitities and Sororities can provide include scholarship awards, study sessions, and tutoring assistance. Many chapters and organizations recognize and reward their members' scholastic excellence. Additionally, according to retention data, members of Fraternities and Sororities are more likely to complete their college degree than their non-affiliated counterparts.
Leadership & Campus Involvement
Membership in a Fraternity or Sorority is one of the best ways to become involved at Mansfield University. Many of the Student Government Association's leaders and officers of other campus organizations are involved with the FSL community. Not only can members participate in campus-wide activities, but also in many other leadership opportunities within each chapter and the respective councils. Research has shown that involved college students are more likely to graduate and report greater satisfaction with their overall college experience. Fraternity and Sorority organizations are working examples of a democracy in action. This is often the first time that members are responsible for their own activities and living within their means. This provides an excellent opportunity to experience leadership and the responsibility of membership. Members are also involved in campus wide organizations such as career-oriented clubs, honor societies, religious groups, and intramural sports.
Community Service & Philanthropic Participation
Fraternity and Sorority Members take pride in giving their time to local and national philanthropies and completing numerous community service projects in the local Mansfield Community. Service and philanthropy provide chapter members with the opportunity to support many causes, which fosters personal growth and unity in the Greek community. The Mansfield University Greek community raises approximately $80,000 and donates over 5,000 hours of Community service benefiting the Mansfield community as well as their own inter/national organizations.
Social Events
While academic achievement is the primary reason to attend MU, there is a time for social interaction. MU's Fraternity and Sorority Community always provides fun activities for its members. Social and recreational activities give you the opportunity to meet a variety of people and to strengthen the bonds of friendship at the same time. Formals, theme parties, and chapter sponsored events bring fraternities and sororities together in a fun and relaxed environment. Participation in traditional events, such as Homecoming, Greek Week, and philanthropic events, demonstrates Greek unity and spirit.
Chapter Housing
Much of the MU Fraternity and Sorority population is housed in Spruce Hall. This hall currently accommodates 4 sororities and 2 fraternities. This community enhances Greek life by attracting potential members and providing a residential site for Fraternities and Sororities to flourish and expand. Spruce is a place where Fraternities and Sororities have created a unique community that helps foster stronger bonds between individual members and between their respective organizations.
