STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Katelyn Gavin
In the past year, Katelyn Gavin has been a model of scholarship and service to the university and the psychology department. As evidence of her outstanding academic performance at Mansfield University, Katelyn is a bright, outgoing, hardworking, and mature individual. She is an independent thinker, learns quickly, and has the enthusiasm and drive to succeed. She is a joy to have as a student in the classroom because she is a good listener, is attentive and respectful of others, and shares her own opinions and comments. She received the Outstanding Second and Third Year Student Awards in the Psychology Department. She is also a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. This March, Katelyn and several of her fellow Psi Chi members will present a research project "The Effects of Media Messages and Perspective-Taking on Prejudice toward Individuals with Mental Illness" at the annual Eastern Psychological Association conference in Philadelphia, PA.
After representing Mansfield University at the PASSHE Undergraduate Women's Leadership Institute this past summer, Katelyn returned to campus with a strong passion for making her department and campus a better place. She became President of the Human Resources Management Club, Secretary for the Psychology Research Group, Secretary for Psi Chi (The International Honor Society in Psychology, a member of Psychology Club, an advocate for the women's center, and a member of SAFE. Her accomplishments as a part of these groups include hosting a panel of local professionals in the field of human resources for students, fundraising, participating in community service, and being captain of her Relay for Life team. On March 25, as part of a project she developed stemming from the Leadership Institute, Katelyn will co-host an event to advocate on the behalf of women on campus and teach others about feminism. This event, Project Equality, involves students, faculty and staff wearing t-shirts with "This is what a feminist looks like" on the front with the definition of feminism on the back: "Feminism is the belief that everyone should be treated equal."
