MU Ceramics Class Helps
in the Fight Against Hunger

Joining in the fight against hunger, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier has been part of an international network of raising funds in collaboration with more than 200 hunger-relief agencies.  Through nutrition education programs, training, workshops, soup kitchens, shelters, and fund-raising activities 92.6% of every dollar raised goes toward hunger relief agencies. “Of the more than 80,000 unduplicated people served by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier each year, more than 39% are age 17 and under, and over 21% are age 65 and older.”

Since 1990, when the Empty Bowls Events was originated in a high school ceramics classroom, thousands of hand-made bowls have been created and donated to the cause by classes and individuals alike.  Millions of dollars have been raised through these activities largely through donations for such events as well as actual food items for the relief agencies.  Located in Elmira, NY, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier is “one of ten America’s Second Harvest Affiliate Food Banks in New York State serving the 6 counties of Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins.”
