Art History

ARH 101 Introduction to Art 3 cr.  

An approach to the dominate movements and ideas of the Western World as they evolved in visual arts from the cave art origins to the 20th Century systems.  

ARH 320 Art of Africa and Oceania 3 cr.

The study of prehistoric and primitive art from the Paleolithic period: Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Mexico, the Americas, and the South Seas.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102 or permission of instructor.

 

ARH 321 Ancient and Medieval Art 3 cr.

Comprehensive study of architecture, sculpture, and painting from the ancient through Gothic periods; emphasis on aesthetic values and historical implications, iconographic and symbolic significance.  Prerequisite: ARH 101 or 102.

 

ARH 322 Art of the Renaissance 3 cr.

Comprehensive study of architecture, painting, and sculpture in Italy, Flanders, Holland, Germany, England, France, and Spain with emphasis on the general characteristics of the Renaissance.  Prerequisite: ARH 101 or 102 or permission of instructor.

 

ARH 323 Baroque and Rococo Art 3 cr.

A comprehensive study of painting, sculpture, and architecture from 1600 - 1750 in Italy, Flanders, Germany, Austria, Holland, Spain, France and England.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102 or permission of instructor.

 

ARH 324 Native Arts of the Americas 3 cr.

A survey of the native arts of North, Central and South America during the pre-Columbian and historic periods.  Painting, sculpture, architecture, and crafts will be examined.

 

ARH 326 Oriental Art 3 cr.

Study of art in China, India, and Japan in the areas of architecture, painting, pottery, sculpture, and the minor arts.  There influences central to the development and spread of important styles and the relationship of art to the classics of Oriental aesthetics.  

ARH 328 History of Architecture 3 cr.

Study of architecture, styles, and methods of construction from the earliest civilizations to the present.  Analysis he outstanding contributions in architecture of the various cultures with emphasis on further development and influences, citing important examples and their architects.  Prerequisite: ARH 101 or 102 or permission of instructor.

 

ARH 330 History of American Art 3 cr.

Comprehensive study of the heritage of American art from the limners and artisans of colonial times through the 20th century in painting, architecture, and sculpture; emphasizing aesthetic values, movements, trends, and contributions of significant artists.  Prerequisite: Art 101, 102, or permission by instructor

 

ARH 331 History of Modern Art 3 cr.

Comprehensive study of the development of modern art from 19th century neoclassism through contemporary movements, emphasizing aesthetic values, historical implications, and contributions of significant artists.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102, or permission of instructor.

 

ARH 401 Cultural Origins of Art 1-12 Cr.

A travel-study seminar abroad visiting various countries around the world.  Provides intensive study of the humanities and cultures from which various art styles emerge.  Lectures will be conducted thoughout the tour by the director.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102 or permission of instructor.  Dual listed with 501.  May be taken for one through nine credits.

 

ARH 407 Empires of the World Though Art 3 cr.

Explores the use of art and architecture of various empires as images of power and political statement.  The Roman, Byzantine, Holy Roman, Ottoman, Russian, and British empires will be examined.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102, or permission by instructor.  Dual listed with 507.

 

ARH 408 Art and Mythology of Ancient Greece 3 cr.

Explores the relationship between art and mythology in ancient Greece from the Bronze Age through the Classical and Hellenistic periods.  Prerequisite: ARH 101, 102 or permission of instructor.  Dual listed with 508.

 

ARH 410 Women in Ancient Greek Art 3 cr.

Women as subjects and patrons in ancient Greek art will be examined with emphasis on the cultural and artistic milieu in which they are represented.   No prerequisite.  Dual listed with 509.

 

ARH 497 Independent Study 1-3 cr.

Independent study is an activity initiated by the student to increase his/her already advanced knowledge in a particular academic discipline.  The subject is examined in an intensive manner with guidance by a faculty member who has special expertise in that field.  May be taken for one, two or three credits at one time.

 

ART 404 Special Problems in Art 1-6 cr.

Designed for students interested  in extending their scope or gaining depth in specific academic areas related to art and/or education.  Since needs conditions change with each student, the requirements and restrictions are determined by and arranged with the chairperson.  May be taken for one through 6 credits.  

 

ART 300 Visual Studies in Aesthetic Experiences 3 cr.

Studies the philosophic theories of art, aesthetic experience, principles and criticism in the nature and comprehension of the character of arts, the artist, and his/her relationship to life.     

 

ART 489 Internship 1-12 cr.

A practical experience in a selected field of artistic endeavor designed to meet the students needs.  May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

 

 

 

ART STUDIO

ART 201 Painting 3 cr. 

Introduction to the methods, techniques, and approaches of the painter.  Emphasis is placed on composition, application, and involvement in creative self-expression.  The understanding and use of the media for solving various problems of representation is stressed.  Dual listed with 511.  

ART 210 Drawing 3 cr.

Builds those skills and attitudes necessary for the remainder of the program.  Introduces the two and three-dimensional aspects of drawing and develops personal power of expression.  Designed to stimulate creative thinking, develop a sensitivity to the art elements, sharpen impressions and the visual memory.  Dual listed with 510.

 

ART 218 Photography 3 cr.

The study of black and white, and digital photography.  Emphasis is on camera skills, darkroom techniques, and the understanding of photographic imagery.  

ART 231 Printmaking 3 cr.

Introduction to the printmaking process of linocut, woodcut, lithography, serigraphy, etching, intaglio, and drypoint with emphasis on their use for creative expression.  Dual listed with 514.  

ART 240 Two-Dimensional Design

An introduction to two-dimensional design through the use of various media.  This course will explore the creative use of color and elements of design, stressing their function and relationships.

 Art 244 Three-Dimensional Design

Three-Dimensional Design is an introduction to the relationship between ideas and the creation of three-dimensional objects.  Students will explore the principles and elements of design as they apply to the creation of three-dimensional works of art. 

ART 251 Jewelry 3 cr.

Study of two and three dimensional design concepts with emphasis on individual solutions in the medium of metal.  Both precious and common materials will be used.  Traditional techniques of jewelry making will be explored.  Dual listed with 516.

 

ART 261 Water Base Media 3 cr.

Explores water base media (transparent, gouache, acrylic polymer) with the intent of establishing a broad base of understanding needed to accomplish personal goals.  Dual listed with 513.

 

ART 271 Ceramics 3 cr.

The study of hand and wheel methods of forming.  Introduces the principles of glaze formulation, kiln stacking, and firing.  Dual listed 515.

 

ART 281 Sculpture 3 cr.

Exploration of three-dimensional design as related to sculpture.  Basic techniques of stone and wood carving will be explored in addition to various methods of material build-ups (wood, plaster, plexiglas, metal, etc.). Dual listed with 519.

ART 318 Advanced Photography 1-12 cr.

A more in-depth study of black and white and digital photography.

Prerequisite: ART 218.  May be taken for one through twelve credits.

 

ART 332 Advanced Printmaking 1-12 cr.

Direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor. 

Prerequisite: ART 231.  May be taken for one through twelve credits.

 

ART 342 Advertising, Design and Lettering 3 cr.

Introduction to advertising.  A comprehensive survey of basic principles and practices in advertising, their relation to economy, society, and system of mass communication.  Psychological and creative factors involved in advertising, design, campaign, media, and research are explored.

 

ART 345 Fibers 3 cr.

A creative application of the principles and elements of design and color theory to fibers and fabrics.  Develops skills in textile techniques and an understanding of the functional and aesthetic probabilities of fibers and fabrics.  Techniques include: weaving, hooking, rya knotting, crochet, knitting, macramé, stitchery, tie-dye, batik, block print, dye painting, spinning, quilting, basketry.  Dual listed with 517.

 

ART 346 Fibers Workshop 3 cr.

Explores the principles of fabric construction as applied to practical uses, the functional and aesthetic uses of fibers, color, and design in textiles, and how to design specifically for textile techniques, sources for materials and equipment, including the building of simple equipment.

 

ART 347 Weaving Spinning 1 - 3 cr.

Explores spinning, weaving, and basic structure of fiber and fabric starting with basic skills and advancing to drafting and weaving your own fabric.  May be taken for one through three credits.

 

ART 352 Advanced Jewelry 1-12 cr.

The direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructior. 

Prerequisite: ART 251.  May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

ART 362 Advanced Water Base Media 1-12 cr.

The direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor. 

Prerequisite: ART 261.  May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

ART 365 Computer Art 1-6 cr.

Introduction to the methods, techniques, and approaches of the computer for graphic application and provide an effective, workable knowledge of computer graphic design that can be applied to the area of creative expression and teaching.  May be taken for 1 through 6 credits.

 

ART 372 Advanced Ceramics 1-12 cr.

Direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor. 

Prerequisite: ART 372 May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

ART 382 Advanced Sculpture 1-12 cr.

Direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor. 

Prerequisite ART 281. May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

ART 403 Seminar 1 cr.

Provides art students with the opportunity to exchange ideas, enhance critical dialectic, and to participate in activities relevant to the professional artist.  The activities in this course will assist the student in developing his/her portfolio and exhibition skills.

 

ART 404 Special Problems in Art 1-6 cr.

ART 442 Advanced Advertising, Design, and Lettering 1 cr.

An advanced course that explores the principles and practices of advertising and their relation to society and mass communication.  Emphasis will be placed on new computer technology in the field of design, research, and media.  Prerequisite: ART 342.

 

ART 445 Advanced Fibers 1-12 cr.

Direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor. 

Prerequisite: ART 345.  May be taken for one through 12 credits.

 

ART 465 Advanced Computer Art 1-6 cr.

Introduction to the methods, techniques and approached of the computer for graphic application.  To provide an effective, workable knowledge or computer graphic design that can be applied to the area of creative expression and teaching.  Prerequisite: ART 365.  May be taken for one through 6 credits.

Art Education

ARE 101 Introduction to Art Education 1 cr.

An introduction to the teaching experience through projects, discussions, and observations.  Includes some teaching of elementary and high school students.  

ARE 343 Arts and Crafts in the Special Education Curriculum 3 cr.

Creative work in a variety of activities with arts and crafts materials.  Particular emphasis is on the needs of special education classes.  

ARE 388 History and Philosophy of Art Education 3 cr.

Acquaints the student with social, historical, and philosophical developments in education and art education.

 

ARE 390 Curriculum and Teaching in Elementary Schools 3 cr.

Provides in-depth experience in lesson plan writing and creating curriculum in art at the elementary level.  Students have the opportunity to teach children in an art program which includes pre-school through elementary grades under the guidance of the professor.  Emphasis is placed upon developing an understanding of motivation and classroom management in preparation for the semester of student teaching.

 

ARE 392 Teaching Art in the Elementary Grades 3 cr.

Examines the philosophy and principles of art education in the elementary school curriculum with experience in the development of self-expression through a variety of public school art materials and activities as a basis for understanding and evaluating children's art work.

 

ARE 393 Art Curriculum and Teaching in Secondary Schools 3 cr.

Provides in-depth experience in lesson plan writing and creating curriculum in art at the secondary level.  Students have the opportunity to teach art at Mansfield High School under the supervision of the professor with the cooperation of a high school art teacher.  Emphasis is placed upon the developing an understanding of motivation and classroom management in preparation for the semester of student teaching.  Prerequisite: ARE 390

 

ARE 394 Curriculum Development in Art Education 2 cr.

Investigation of the concepts, attitudes, and values of art theory and practice as related to curriculum; a study of classroom problems and procedures in various teaching situations.

 

ARE 400 Student Teaching 12 cr.

Provides practical experience in teaching art at the elementary and secondary levels under the guidance of a cooperating teacher.  Observations and conferences scheduled by the department supervisor are held on a periodic basis.  Enables students to apply knowledge and skills acquired in the Art Education program.  ARE is required for students seeking certification to teach.  Prerequisite: 2.5 Q.P.A

 

ARE 444 Art and Recreation for the Handicapped Child 6 cr.

A three-week workshop with instruction in and practical application of art and recreation for the handicapped child in connection with the Easter Seal Society of Pennsylvania.  The first part is on campus for several days in a classroom situation.  The second part is in an Easter Seal Society Camp for the two-week session, living, working, and playing with young handicapped children 24 hours a day under the direction and supervision of both camp and university professionals.

ARE 531  Art Education in the Elementary Curriculum - 3 Credits

A survey of programs in the elementary schools.  An investigation of vibrant and imaginative strategies of teaching with emphasis on revitalizing the elementary art curriculum to meet the needs of today's children.

 

ARE 532  Art Education in the Secondary Curriculum - 3 Credits

An intensive appraisal of teaching strategies, methods, and techniques in the secondary school.  Emphasis on investigation and exploration of problems with methods for improvement and practical change.

 

ARE 533  Administration and Supervision of Art Education - 3 Credits

The investigation and identification of the roles, duties, and responsibilities of art administration and art supervisors.  Review the development and implementers of art programs in the public schools and in other environments with practical application directed toward the student's present position.

 

ARE 534  Application of Aesthetic Theory -3 Credits

The concept of relating philosophic application of art and aesthetic content to the nature and comprehension of creativity.

 

ARE 535  Art and the Special Child -3 Credits

An exploration of types of characteristics of children who are special: either gifted, physically handicapped, emotionally disturbed, or culturally deprived, and strategies for art experiences with these children.

 

ARE 536  Current Trends in Art Education -3 Credits

Exploration and discussion of materials, processes, and philosophies in art education; experimentation with materials as well as discussion of current publications and research.

 

ARE 598 Research -3 Credits; ARE 599 Thesis -6 Credits

After completion of all required course work the candidate for the M.Ed. in Art will submit a proposal to his advisor for a research topic.  The candidate will complete a written scholarly document for presentation to the graduate committee.

ARH 502  Art of the Far East -3 Credits

Introduction and some in-depth study of Eastern Art.  Cultural areas and arts covered are: India, China, and Japan.  Method of teaching involves reading, lectures, discussions, museum visits, films, a research and a specialized topic and an oral report on the topic.  Students are encouraged to investigate resources, art monuments, collections, objects, and philosophy.

 

ARH 503  Art of The 15th and 16th Centuries -3 Credits

The study of architecture, sculpture, and painting in Italy, Flanders, Germany, France, and Spain of the 15th and 16th centuries, emphasizing the characteristics and influences of the Renaissance and Post-Renaissance periods.

 

ARH 504  Major Trends in Art of the 17th and 18th Centuries -3 Credits

A comprehensive study of major contributions of European art and architecture during the 17th and 18th centuries.

 

ARH 505  Major Trends in Modern Art -3 Credits

A study of the major movements in modern art since the late nineteenth century, with analysis of techniques and concepts in their historical context; close attention to the characteristics and significance of the work of leading figures and the movements considered.

 

ARH 507  Empires of the World Through Art -3 Credits

A study of how the art and architecture of various empires were used as images of power and political statement.  The Roman, Byzantine, Holy Roman, Ottoman, Russian, and British Empires will be examined.

A comprehensive study of the art and architecture of the traditional Native Americas, with emphasis on regional styles and cultural interpretation.

 

ARH 527  Major Trends in Architecture -3 Credits

A comprehensive study of the history of monumental buildings.  Cultural trends, historical innovations, and individual contributions will be examined.

 

ARH 528  Major Trends in American Art -3 Credits

A study of the major trends in the art and architecture of the United States from the colonial period to the present.

 

 

 

ART STUDIO

 

ART 510  Drawing -3 Credits

An opportunity for the serious student to translate original responses into visual statements that are inventive and personal.  Investigations and explorations aimed at developing individual skill, vision and organizational concepts.  Awareness of current tastes in the art of drawing will be considered.  Stress on dialogue between teacher and student plus group interaction.

 

ART 511  Painting -3 Credits

The student is expected to concentrate either on advancing skills in the media with which he or she already has some depth of experience, or to pursue experiments in unfamiliar media to increase the breadth of his knowledge.

 

ART 512  Crafts -3 Credits

Development and experimentation in basic and specialized are of the crafts.  Students will research  and explore various techniques, processes and materials to gain an in-depth skill and knowledge in specific crafts.  Media will include: wood, plastic, paper, fibers, and natural materials as well as synthetic material.

 

ART 513  Waterbase Media -3 Credits

An in-depth study of transparent watercolor techniques and acrylic polymer techniques.  Studio explorations will constitute the major portion of the course.

 

ART 514  Printmaking -3 Credits

An exploration into the printmaking processes of woodcut, lithography, serigraphy, calligraphy, etching and engraving with emphasis in their use for creative expression.

 

ART 515  Ceramics -3 Credits

An advanced studio course for the art teacher interested in bringing the importance of ceramics (past and modern world) to his or her students.

 

ART 516  Metalcraft -3 Credits

A studio course in applied metal design and advanced techniques in metalcraft.  Project assignment will be based on student's prior experience and interests in metal.  Students will be exposed to a wide variety of methods of manipulating and fabricating metal forms.  Student's exposure will also include various methods of casting metal.

 

ART 517  Fibers -3 Credits

The creative application of the principles and elements of design and color theory to fibers and fabrics.  Techniques may include weaving, rug making, dyeing processes, basketry, macramé, crochet, and lace making.

 

ART 519  Sculpture -3 Credits

A studio course in three-dimensional concepts and advanced techniques in sculpture.  Project assignment will be based on student experience and interests in sculptural forms.  Students will have the opportunity to work additively or subtractively in wood, stone, metal, and to receive exposure to foundry casting.

 

ART 520  Graduate Art Seminar -1 Credit

A seminar course relevant to the needs of a practicing artist.  Students will be introduced to methods of seeking and gathering information pertinent to his or her studio specialty and geographic region.  Each student will be required to develop a resource notebook that will assist them throughout their productive years as an artist.

 

ART 565  Computer Graphics -3 Credits

Hands-on training in educational and graphic applications for teaching.  A comprehensive survey of advanced principles and practices on the Macintosh computer as they relate to fine arts, to education, and to the community with media processes.

 

ART 595  Special Projects -1-6 Credits

An art project undertaken by an individual with special needs, special interests, or special problems in art or art education.  Project goals will be mutually developed by the student and instructor.  Permission of the instructor, chairperson, and Associate Provost are required.

 

ART 597   Art Presentation/Exhibition -3 Credits

As part of the 33 Semester hour non-thesis program the candidate may elect to present an art presentation/exhibition.  Examples of this type of project might involve the candidate in a mural painting task, the building of a unique kiln for firing ceramics, an exhibit of art that may tie to a new teaching strategy, etc.  In addition to the actual performance of the art presentation/exhibition, the candidate must present documented evidence of planning, researching the problem and other processes involved.  The art presentation/exhibition must be approved by the candidate's advisor and the evaluation of the art presentation/exhibition will take place after the event.  This is not a required course buy may be used as an elective.
