The Mansfield University
Chemistry & Physics Department is housed in Grant Science Center. Our
department is a small, yet broad based, challenging but caring department
interested in the educational needs and aspirations of every student. We are
staffed by well qualified, experienced professors. Our faculty represent a
great diversity of interest in Chemistry & Physics that covers the major
areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, biochemistry, solid state
physics, astronomy, electromagnetism, and electronics.
In addition to the usual
laboratory equipment and glassware, the department has a large assortment of
instrumentation available for student use, including, atomic absorption
spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph,
infrared, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible
spectrophotometers, spectrofluorophotometer, and scanning tunneling
microscope. The department also houses a nice Spitz planetarium.
The modern facilities and
equipment are used by students throughout their studies at Mansfield in a
variety of laboratory experiments. These experiments and, in fact, the
entire Chemistry & Physics curriculum are designed to give the student a
sound and broad based background in their discipline. All Chemistry options
are structured to meet the standards of the American Chemical Society and
the needs of a small department.
Students who complete the ACS approved chemistry degree program will then be
certified by the ACS, the largest scientific society in the world.
Close student-faculty interaction assures the student of access to and the
attention of our faculty.
In addition to the
traditional curriculum offerings, we also offer opportunities for students
to perform undergraduate research with a faculty member or to participate in
a cooperative education program with an industry. The B.S. degree in Physics
with Pre-Engineering emphasis is a unique and popular program whereby
students interested in Physics and Engineering obtain a degree in both
fields upon satisfactory completion of the required course work.
The goals of
the Chemistry & Physics Department, and those of Mansfield University, are
to offer a quality, liberal arts educational experience, combined with a
concentration in a major academic discipline at an affordable cost.
Mansfield is in a unique position to provide such an experience. We are
small. We have a low student - faculty ratio. Our faculty are committed to
teaching excellence and a liberal arts curriculum. All of these combine to
assure a quality educational environment. Our affiliation with the state of
Pennsylvania assures accredited and affordable education.
