The attached PROGRAM CHANGE is being proposed by the Department of History and Political Science.

**Please note: The bulk of these course deletions, course changes, and new courses were passed by the University Senate on Thursday, 2/8. (see C.A.N. 1/26/00)

AAC has delayed discussion of the Program change proposal (and course deletions and changes effecting other minors) until we receive a report from the Academic Planning Committee.

PROGRAM CHANGE PROPOSAL

1) Date: 2/08/01 Department: History & Political Science

2) Rationale for change:

Curricular and program changes resulting from program review. The intent is to standardize offerings with other SSHE institutions and to comply with changes in certification requirements.

3) Old Degree and/or Program Title (attach Old ER) HISTORY B.A.

New Degree and/or Program Title (attach New ER) HISTORY B.A.

List all change(s) (e.g. degree, program, addition/deletion of course(s), etc.).

1. Change number of hours required for graduation from 128 to 120.
2. Revise degree requirements for B.A. (and, with Chapter 354, B.S.E.) majors.

   a. Six credits of World Civilization (HST 111, 112, 113)

   b. Six credits of United States History (HST 201, 202)

   c. Three credits of Historical Methods (HST 290)

   d. Three credits of Pennsylvania History (HST 401) or Senior Seminar (HST496).

   e. Six credits of European History from the following:

   HST 220, 313, 330, 345, 366, 420

   f. Six credits of United States History from the following:

   HST 210, 265, 303, 304, 305, 307, 310, 315, 320, 333, 389, 406, 415, 431

   g. Six credits of Global History from the following:

   HST 377, 387, 388, 389, 452, 471, 487

   3. Delete existing courses that will not be offered under the new program.

   HST 333: History of Ethnic and Religious Diversity in America

   HST 350: Introduction to Public History

   HST 377: History of Latin America

   HST 420: Nazi Germany and the Holocaust

   HST 431: History of Consumer Culture in America

   HST 452: South Africa: From Cape Colony to Apartheid

   HST 471: History of Mexico & the Caribbean

   HST 487: Pacific Rim: History and the Contemporary World

   5. Course changes:

   HST 113: World in the Twentieth Century (formerly HST 104). Number changed to provide three semester sequence for World Civilization courses.

   HST 265: History of Sports in American Society (formerly HST 205). Number changed to provide upper level course in Sports History, consistent with sports history offerings at other institutions.

   HST 366: Twentieth Century Europe. Course description changed.

   HST 388: History of Africa. Course description changed and prerequisite deleted.

   6. Establish equivalencies for students currently enrolled at Mansfield University.

   HST 111 and 112 will satisfy the current ER requirement of HST 101 and 102.

   HST 290 will satisfy the current ER requirement of HST 300.

   HST 305, 307, 389, 431 will satisfy the current ER requirement for 20th century U.S. history.

4) Program description for catalog:

No change.

5) Effect proposal has on other programs:

One additional history course for Women's Studies minor.

One additional history course for African American Studies minor.

Two fewer history courses for Latin American Studies minor, but revised courses will be more comprehensive and will be offered more frequently.

Two fewer history courses for Native American Studies minor.
