- Rationale for program:
Medical transcriptionists are in demand in Northern
Pennsylvania and nationally. The U.S. Department of Labor
website reports that the job prospects for medical
transcriptionists is expected to grow at an average rate
(10 to 20%) through 2008.
- Program description for the catalog:
The AAS Degree in Medical Transcription is a two year
degree program offered by Mansfield University's Robert
Packer Department of Health Sciences. The program
prepares medical transcriptionists to interpret and
transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare
professionals regarding patient assessment, workup,
therapeutic procedures, clinical course, prognosis, etc.
editing dictated material for grammar and clarity as
necessary and appropriate.
Medical Transcription students begin their first semester
of study at Mansfield University. The following three
semesters consist of course work and laboratory/hands-on
experience at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.
Medical transcriptionists must possess excellent English
grammar skills as well as keyboarding skills. Jobs are
found in hospitals, clinics, physician offices,
transcription services, insurance companies, and home
health agencies. Employment trends indicate in addition
to jobs in healthcare agencies, medical transcriptionists
also work in homes as independent contractors or as
home-based employees.
- Program Objectives: At the end of the program, the
graduate will:
- Apply rules of proper English grammar,
punctuation, and style and use correct spelling and
logical sentence structure to all medical
transcription documentation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology,
anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, laboratory
tests, pharmacology, surgery, imaging techniques, and
pathology as it pertains to medical
transcription.
- Demonstrate ability to operate designated medical
transcription equipment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ocntent,
purpose and legal aspects of health records.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and an
understanding of the legal and ethical aspects of
medical transcription.
- Function at a level worthy of employment as a
medical transcriptionist.
- Effect proposal has on other programs:
Students should be able to take General Education courses
which are already scheduled. The only exception may be
offering a one credit wellness course in Sayre.
