Curriculum Action Notice

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Helen Biblehimer, Elliott Hall 203, ext. 4521, hbiblehi@mnsfld.edu.

The Department of Health Sciences has requested the following curricular changes:

#1 Action: Program Change: Sports Nutrition

Rationale for change:

1. These changes make our program more marketable to students who are interested in combining sports nutrition with other fields of study. Our students will now have the option of completing a major and a minor within four years.
2. These changes also improve the marketability of our program to transfer students. Transfer students often have difficulties completing course requirements and general education requirements. These changes will increase the chances that students transferring from community colleges will be able to graduate in a reasonable time.

List all changes:

• Move DIT 211 from the Major area to the General Education Wellness block.
• Move CHM 102 from the Natural Science block to the General Education Electives block
• Move BSC 121 from the cognate block to the Natural Sciences block.
• Move BSC 122 from the cognate block to the General Education Electives block.
• Reduce the number of credits in the major from 48 to 37.

#2 Action: Program Change: Nutrition and Dietetics

Rationale for change:

1. Our most recent program review revealed that the students believe that the program contains too many foods classes. The 2002 Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies for Entry-Level Dietitian Education Programs of the American Dietetic Association's credentialing agency contains fewer foods related competencies than the previous standards.
2. After we reduced the number of credits from 128 to 120, fewer of our students were able to do a minor along with their major. Students with minors are more marketable than students who are unable to complete minors. Additionally, our program is more marketable to students who are interested in combining nutrition and dietetics with other fields of study. These changes allow our students the option of completing a major in nutrition and dietetics and a minor within four years.
3. These changes also improve the marketability of our program to transfer students. Transfer students often have difficulties completing course requirements and general education requirements. These changes will increase the chances that students transferring from community colleges will be able to graduate in a reasonable time.

List all changes:

• Delete DIT 306 Meal Management from the major requirements.
• Move DIT 211 from the Major area to the General Education Wellness block.
• Move CHM 102 from the Natural Science block to the General Education Electives block
• Move BSC 121 from the cognate block to the Natural Sciences block.
• Move BSC 122 from the cognate block to the General Education Electives block.
• Reduce the number of credits in the major from 59 to 45.
