| The
department of Psychology has requested the following curricular changes:
#1 Action: New Course: PSY 3315 Human Management I
Purpose and Nature of Course: This course would replace
Psy 410, Industrial and Organizational Psychology and some content
and exercises from Psy 313, Psychology of Interviewing. Given that
few people know what industrial/organizational psychology is, it is
anticipated that the name change will increase enrollment. Content
and numbering change are intended to position the course at the Junior-year
level and make it more accessible to non-majors.
Course Description for Catalog
Introduces the field of Human Resource Management (HRM). Covers
strategic management and HRM, the legal context, measurement of job
content, recruiting, selection, and human resource development. May
be taken before or after Psy 3316.
Prerequisites: Psy 1101
#2 Action: New Course: PSY 3316 Human Resource Management
II
Purpose and Nature of Course: This course would replace
Psy 491, Seminar in Human Resource Management and some content and
exercises from Psy 313, Psychology of Interviewing. Content and numbering
change are intended to position the course at the Junior-year level
and make it more accessible to non-majors.
Course Description for Catalog
Continues coverage of the field of Human Resource Management (HRM).

and health (OSHA), workplace violence, health information privacy
issues, job design, organization development, and international HRM.

Prerequisites: Psy 1101
#3 Action: New Course: PSY 4415 Labor Relations
Purpose and Nature of Course: This course would partially
replace Psy 412, HRM Special Topics. Alumni have identified knowledge
in the Labor Relations area as critical for success in the field.
Previous enrollment was limited because the Special Topics course
could not be listed in the
course schedule under the Labor Relations title and because the course
was not required under the old program.
Course Description for Catalog
Labor relations are part of the organizational landscape in manufacturing,
service, government, and professional sports. Course examines the
history of unions, the organizing process, roles of both
parties in contract negotiation and administration, strikes and conflict
resolution, grievances, and arbitration processes.
Prerequisites: Psy 1101
#4 Action: New Course: PSY 4416 Compensation and Benefits
Purpose and Nature of Course: This course would partially
replace Psy 412, HRM Special Topics. Alumni have identified knowledge
in the Compensation and Benefits area as critical for success in the
field. Previous enrollment was limited because the Special Topics
course could not be listed in the course schedule under the Compensation
and Benefits title and because the course was not required under the
old program.
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):
Introduces participants to current issues and techniques in compensation
and benefits. Coverage includes the legal context for compensation,
job evaluation and point factor systems, construction of Compensation
surveys, pay for performance systems, workers' compensation, Social
Security,
unemployment insurance, ERISA and retirement plans, and issues in
executive compensation. The course emphasizes conceptual, social,
and practical issues related to the development and
administration of compensation systems.
Prerequisites: Psy 1101
#5 Action: Course Deletion: PSY 313 Psychology of Interviewing
Rationale for deletion: Program being revised to meet
SSHE mandate and changes in professional expectations. Deletion is
to balance new course offering. Course has had 16 or fewer enrolled
students for the past 12 years. Enrollment for Fall 2002 is 11 students.
Some content moved to new courses Psy 3315 and Psy 3316.
#6 Action: Course Deletion: PSY 410 Industrial and Organizational
Psychology
Rationale for deletion: Program being revised to meet
SSHE mandate and changes in professional expectations. Deletion is
to balance new course offering. Content moves to new course, Psy 3315,
Human Resource Management I. This should encourage students to complete
course during Junior year and make it more likely that they will be
able to complete internship during summer between Junior and Senior
years, thereby increasing their chances of graduating in May of their
Senior year.
#7. Action: Course Deletion: PSY 412 HRM Special Topics
Rationale for deletion: Program being revised to meet
SSHE mandate and changes in professional expectations. Deletion is
to balance new course offerings. Content moved to Psy 4415 and Psy
4416.
#8. Action: Course Deletion: PSY 491 Seminar in Human Resource
Management
Rationale for deletion: Program being revised to meet
SSHE mandate and changes in professional expectations. Deletion is
to balance new course offering. HRM content moves to new course, Psy

by requiring HRM majors to complete the Psychology Department's Senior
Seminar course, Psy 4490.

Management Emphasis
Rationale for change:
Comply with SSHE mandate to reduce degree requirements to 120 credits.

in four years. Update program and courses for possible participation
in AACSB review.
