# 8 Action:
Program Change: Nursing
Proposed change:
- Increase the GPA requirement for enrolling in a nursing (NUR)
course, other than NUR 1170, from 2.5 to 2.7.
- Requirements for GPA and prerequisite courses must be met by
the end of the semester before taking NUR 3270 or 3271 (at the end
of the Spring semester before taking NUR 3270; at the end of the
Fall semester before taking NUR 3271). Courses taken during summer
sessions or between the Fall and Spring semesters can not be used
to meet the requirements for progression to sophomore and junior
level courses.
- Require BSC 1121 or instructor permission as a prerequisite for
NUR 3270.
- Move PHL 3380 from the distribution elective section to the humanities
section
- Require a minimum grade of C in BSC 1121, BSC 1122, CHM 1110,
and BSC 3271 to progress in the nursing program. This is an increase
from a requirement of C minus for these courses.
1. Rationale for change:
GPA increase:
- Difficulty of the Registered Nurse State Board licensing examination
has been increased to mirror the work expectations during the first
year after graduation.
- GPA comparisons of the mean scores for those passing and those
not passing the State Board licensing examination indicated that
students with lower than 2.7 GPA failed the exam.
Meet GPA and science grade requirements at end of semester:
- Typically weaker students who repeat science courses or take
courses to raise GPA at times other than during the regular Fall
and Spring semesters do not succeed in nursing courses. Review of
student records indicate students who repeat courses to meet science
requirements or raise GPA during a regular semester are more apt
to succeed in nursing program.
BSC 1121 as a prerequisite for NUR 3270:
- NUR 3270 relies heavily on understanding of Anatomy and Physiology.
We have found students without BSC 1121 are at a great disadvantage
and often do not successfully complete NUR 3270.
Move PHL 3380 to humanities block:
- Students are continually asking for PHL 3380 to be moved to the
humanities section
Grade of C in BSC 1121, BSC 1122, CHM 1110 and BSC 3271
- This content has become more important because of the increased
sophistication of nursing science (intravenous medication administration;
electronic monitoring, antibiotic resistant bacteria)
List all changes:
Move PHL 3380 to the humanities block
Impact on other programs (if any):
- Philosophy: Minimal impact, if any, on Philosophy because PHL
3380 is still required by the nursing program.
- Chemistry and Biology: Potential for increase in student numbers
because more students may have to repeat science courses.
# 9 Action:
Program Change: A.A.S. degree, Respiratory Therapy
Rationale for change:
Unacceptable respiratory therapy student attrition in respiratory
care courses has been a problem, noted by both the program faculty
and the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), and
resulted in a program change implemented in the fall, 2002. For the
first class affected by this change, the attrition rate was reduced,
but did not meet CoARC requirements. To further reduce attrition,
an increase in the prerequisite minimum grade point average for the
RTH 1101, RTH 1102, and RTH 1199 courses, from 2.0 to 2.3, is being
proposed.
List all changes:
- The prerequisite minimum grade point average for the RTH 1101
Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, RTH 1102 Fundamentals of Respiratory
Care II, and RTH 1199 Clinical Practicum I courses will be increased
from 2.0 to 2.3.
- Require a minimum grade of “C” in BSC 1121 and MA
128.
#10 Action:
Program Change: Medical Terminology and Fundamentals of Radiology
Rationale for change:
New courses in medical terminology and fundamentals of radiology
and health care are now required by the program’s new ASRT Curriculum
Guide.
PHY Physics for Applied Health Sciences is redundant within the current
curriculum and no longer required by the new ASRT Curriculum Guide.
The required physics course content is taught in XRT 2203 X-Ray Physics
List all changes:
- PHY 1165 Physics for Applied Health Sciences will be dropped (3
credits)
- New Medical Terminology for the Radiographer course will be added
(2 credits)
- New Fundamentals of Radiologic Science and Health Care course
will be added (1 credit)
