4. New Course: SPE 4400 L (Professional Experiences Lab) Purpose and Nature of Course: This new course is being developed to respond to PDE program redesign mandates and will be included as a required course in several education programs. It is designed to supplement SPE 4400 Student Teaching and replaces the current SPE 4460. It is a capstone course in the education program which gives students the opportunity to integrate theory and field experience through the completion of an electronic program portfolio. It is also a seminar, providing students the opportunity to reflect on and process the events and activities of the school experience in which they are concurrently immersed fulltime. PROGRAM CHANGE: SPECIAL EDUCATION Rationale for change: To more accurately reflect the required Chapter 49 changes to the special education certification program. As stated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, special education will no longer be a separate degree program in Pennsylvania. Instead, special education will be an additional certification that education majors can add to their primary certification program. Candidates for teaching certification in Pennsylvania must meet state requirements described in Chapter 49 regulations. A description of requirements, policies, and procedures for teacher certification can by found in the catalog section entitled, “Teacher Education Certification.” See page ___ The special education program prepares students to work with exceptional individuals through a variety of teaching methods and practicum experiences. Students who complete the requirements for certification in special education receive a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and a Pennsylvania Instructional I teaching certificate. This certificate allows students to teach children in grades PreK-8 or 7- 12 with exceptionalities in the areas of mental retardation, emotional disturbance, autism, physical disability, learning disability and brain injury. This is a second certification which will be in addition to their primary certification in Early Childhood /Elementary Education (PreK-4) or Secondary Education (7-12). Many graduates of the certification program also pursue graduate studies after obtaining their undergraduate degree. See Early Childhood/Elementary Education. Program Objectives (if changed): The Special Education Certification Program will provide candidates with the skills, knowledge and competencies necessary to meet the needs of students with disabilities in multiple settings. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge and competencies in the areas of academic, social and emotional growth and methods to implement that knowledge to maximize a student's abilities. Utilizing research-based effective instructional strategies and diagnostic and instructionally adaptive strategies for all learners, as well as competence in applying appropriate instructional practices to meet the diverse needs of all early childhood, elementary, and high school level students (PDE, 2008). |
