Impact on other programs (if any): Four courses from the Masters in Organizational Leadership are required for the nursing leadership/administration track. EDUCATION COURSES 12. NEW COURSE: ED 5510: FOSTERING ADOLESCENT CONTENT LITERACY Purpose and Nature of Course: This course is designed to provide a graduate equivalent to ED 3310. Currently, ELE 5528 is listed as the graduate equivalent for ED 3310, and typically 1-3 post-baccalaureate students seeking teaching certification at the high school level take this course in its dual-listed format. However, ELE 5528 is also a core course in the Reading Specialist program. The RS program is an advanced certification program, whereas post-baccalaureate students are seeking an initial teaching certification. In addition, the Reading Specialist program has increasingly integrated literacy coaching elements into all of its core courses, and these aspects of the certification are not appropriate for individuals who are just learning their craft. Prefix: ED Number: 5510 Course Title: Fostering Adolescent Content Literacy Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule), Maximum 20 spaces Fost Adol Cont Lit Credit(s) ___3_ Graduate Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Investigates current and foundational research on adolescent learning theory as it applies to literacy development and acquisition. Provides proven core strategies that develop lifelong literacy skills and allow students to make meaning through interaction with varied forms of text, including non-print media, with the goal of enhancing student’s content comprehension and access to vocabulary. Designed for the needs of the secondary content area teacher. Offered in a modular timeframe format. Co-requisites: (Courses which must be taken prior to or simultaneously with): ED 3320 (due to the modular format) If taught dual-level or cross-listed with another department, list: Prefix ED Number 3310 13. NEW COURSE: ED 5553: APPLICATIONS IN LITERACY COACHING Purpose and Nature of Course: Traditionally, reading specialists work strictly with k-12 students. In recent years, the role of the reading specialist has expanded to include direct work with classroom teachers and support of school-wide implementation of literacy initiatives. This expansion has taken place both in the practice and in the professional literature. While the state of Pennsylvania does not offer certification in literacy coaching, the International Reading Association emphasizes the need for literacy coaches to hold reading specialist certification. This course will provide a field-based experience for certified reading specialists seeking to develop the leadership, communication, and professional collaboration skills that are essential to effective literacy coaching. Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a letter of endorsement for literacy coaching from the Department of Education and Special Education at MU. Prefix: ED/ELE Number: 5553 Course Title: Applications in Literacy Coaching Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule), Maximum 20 spaces Literacy Coaching Credit(s) ___3_ Graduate Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Field-based literacy coaching for certified reading specialists. Emphasis on needs-analysis and effective and collaborative professional development in literacy-related pedagogy in the school setting. Prerequisites: Reading Specialist certification Describe any student enrollment restrictions (limited to majors in program XXX, restricted from majors in program XXX, etc.) Limited to graduate students who have completed the twenty-one credit reading specialist core. MUSIC 14. PROGRAM CHANGE: MUSIC (BA) Rationale for change: The music department seeks to re-name and re-organize its music business and technology offerings, currently listed as Bachelor of Music in Music Industry. The title of this degree should be listed simply as “Bachelor of Music” with optional concentrations. The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) has released new guidelines for the naming of professional programs combining music with significant studies in an outside area. In order to comply with the new NASM guidelines, we seek to clarify our offerings by specifying two concentrations within the Bachelor of Music degree: 1. Elective Studies in Business 2. Emphasis in Music Technology In addition, the music technology curriculum needs one minor adjustment in its computer science requirement to allow for more choice and flexibility. Old Degree and Program Title (attach an old ER): B. Music, Music Industry New Degree and Program Title (attach a new ER): B. Music with Optional Concentrations List all changes: · CHANGE the name of the program as listed in the catalog and all advertising or promotions from “Bachelor of Music in Music Industry” to “Bachelor of Music” with optional concentrations · GROUP the three existing music business tracks (Business Administration, Management, and Marketing) under the concentration “Elective Studies in Business.” The three track options within this concentration will be: o Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business: Business Administration Track o Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business: Marketing Track o Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business: Management Track The specific course requirements for these tracks, as previously defined, will not change. · MOVE the current “Music Technology Track” to a separate concentration of the Bachelor of Music degree as “Emphasis in Music Technology” o Make one adjustment to the computer science requirement for the technology concentration: replace CIS 3330 Computer Organization with a computer science elective (any CIS course numbered 2200 or higher). Program Description for Catalog (if changed): Bachelor of Music with Optional Concentrations The Bachelor of Music program with optional concentrations is designed to help prepare young musicians for careers in music and the music industry in a wide range of fields, including arts management and promotion, music products merchandising, publishing, music technology, multimedia, or studio recording and production. Students may choose to pursue the Bachelor of Music with either 1) Elective Studies in Business or 2) Emphasis in Music Technology. The Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business combines professional studies in music with an 18-credit block of electives in business. Students may follow one of three tracks that follow the same requirements as defined by the Business department for minors in business administration, management, or marketing. The Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Music Technology combines professional studies in music with coursework in computer-based music notation, electronic music, recording, and studio production techniques. Additional coursework is drawn from the Communications and Computer Information Science departments in order to develop the student’s basic understanding of mass media and relevant computer technologies. Students in both concentrations take Survey of Music Business and complete the degree with a 14-week internship in a music industry area of the student’s interest or intended employment. The internship is normally done during the final semester or summer after all other course work has been completed. Students pursuing the business or technology concentrations must complete the music core curriculum for all Bachelor of Music degrees at MU, including theory, music history, keyboard skills, ensemble participation, instrumental or vocal private lessons, and secondary applied study. All students must pass the first piano proficiency and sophomore review and are required to perform at least once per year on the weekly Thursday afternoon music department recitals. Students completing a Bachelor of Music degree must also perform a solo recital in their senior year. Students must successfully complete a live audition in an applied music area (instrumental or vocal) for admission into this program. The audition will include aural skills and music theory placement tests. Program Objectives (if changed): Impact on other programs (if any): Changes in the CIS requirements for music technology students will have minimal (if any) impact on the computer science department compared to the current requirement. Howard Iseri, chair of Mathematics and Computer Science, has indicated his support. 15. NEW COURSE: MU 4460/5560: PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION IN MUSIC Purpose

PROGRAM CHANGE: CHEMISTRY & PHYSICS Rationale for change: The Chemistry and Physics program currently focuses its assessment protocols on junior, senior and recent program alumni. And while, by all measures, our students are meeting or exceeding the assessment criteria we have established, there is still one vital piece or information we are missing. We currently have no way to assess the science content knowledge and skills of the students coming into the Chemistry and Physics department at MU. The creation of the new SCI 1100 Science Freshman orientation course will allow us to “close the loop” in our program assessment. The new course, while including all of the topics currently found in UNV 1100, will include additional content specifically for chemistry and physics majors, and will also allow the program to collect baseline data to be used in our annual reports and program reviews (content knowledge, writing skills, oral presentation skills, organizational skills, etc.) List all changes: SCI 1100 will substitute for UNV 1100. It will be required of all Chemistry and Physics majors. If a student has taken UNV 1100 previously (and passed it), they will not be required to take this course. MATHEMATICS 30. NEW COURSE: MA 5560 ABSTRACT ALGEBRA Rationale for change: We are proposing the addition of a mathematics concentration in the MSEd program (Secondary Education). There has been a steady stream of inquiries over the years into the existence of graduate math courses from local secondary math teachers. While local demand is probably too small to justify regularly scheduled graduate courses in mathematics, there seems to be a large market for online graduate math courses. There are a small number of online masters-level math education programs available, and only two that we can find in mathematics. Both math programs are at expensive private schools. Our math offerings, while targeted to high school and community college teachers, will be mathematics courses, and we are confident that the demand for such courses would be extremely high. If these courses are successful, Math and CIS would like to start an MA Mathematics program using the same pool of courses targeting secondary math teachers, who would like to teach at a community college. Old Degree and Program Title (attach an old ER): M.S.Ed. Secondary Education Core: 15 Semester Hours ED 5500 Methods and Materials of Research ED 5554 Curriculum: Principles & Contemporary Thought ED 5530 Seminar on Cultural Diversity in Education SPE 55** Any SPE course other than SPE 5550 and SPE 5570 ED 5592 The Teacher and Educational Leadership Concentration: 12 Semester Hours in various concentrations New Degree and Program Title (attach a new ER): M.S.Ed. Secondary Education (same) (Same) List all changes: Add Mathematics emphasis to the Secondary Education concentration. In Secondary Education concentration, a Mathematics emphasis would consist of 12 semester hours of MA 55**. Initial offerings will include MA 5508 (Stochastic Models), MA 5520 (Selected Topics), MA 5530 (Introduction to Manifold Geometry), MA 5560 (Abstract Algebra), and MA 5580 (Advanced Linear Algebra). MA 5520 may be repeated any number of times (since we would never offer the same topic twice). Program Description for Catalog (if changed): Add Mathematics Emphasis under Secondary concentration: Mathematics emphasis: 12 semester hours of MA 55**. Impact on other programs (if any): Mathematics faculty will be used to staff the new graduate math courses. The plan is to offer one course each semester online (and on overload initially). If successful, mathematics staff could be expanded in some way. |
