Course Title:    Concepts of Professional Nursing for RN Students__

Rationale for change: 

When the RN to BSN program was first offered, NUR 3260 (Concepts of Professional Nursing) was the first course RNs were supposed to take.  It was designed to be a “bridge” course between associate degree nursing education and baccalaureate nursing education.  Over the years, associate degree nursing education has changed and the course is no longer necessary.

The second major change is to allow RN to BSN students to take either NUR 3391 (Pathophysiologic and Pharmacologic Bases of Nursing I) or NUR 3392 (Pathophysiologic and Pharmacologic Bases of Nursing II), not both.  This change will allow RN to BSN students to take courses that focus on areas other than basic nursing content.

Traditionally, reading specialists work strictly with k-12 students. In recent years, the role of the reading specialist has expanded to include direct work with classroom teachers and support of school-wide implementation of literacy initiatives.  This expansion has taken place both in the practice and in the professional literature.  

While the state of Pennsylvania does not offer certification in literacy coaching, the International Reading Association emphasizes the need for literacy coaches to hold reading specialist certification. This course will provide a field-based experience for certified reading specialists seeking to develop the leadership, communication, and professional collaboration skills that are essential to effective literacy coaching. Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a letter of endorsement for literacy coaching from the Department of Education and Special Education at MU.

            The music department seeks to re-name and re-organize its music business and technology offerings, currently listed as Bachelor of Music in Music Industry.  The title of this degree should be listed simply as “Bachelor of Music” with optional concentrations.

            The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) has released new guidelines for the naming of professional programs combining music with significant studies in an outside area.  In order to comply with the new NASM guidelines, we seek to clarify our offerings by specifying two concentrations within the Bachelor of Music degree:

Bachelor of Music with Optional Concentrations

The Bachelor of Music program with optional concentrations is designed to help prepare young musicians for careers in music and the music industry in a wide range of fields, including arts management and promotion, music products merchandising, publishing, music technology, multimedia, or studio recording and production.  Students may choose to pursue the Bachelor of Music with either 1) Elective Studies in Business or 2) Emphasis in Music Technology.

The Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business combines professional studies in music with an 18-credit block of electives in business. Students may follow one of three tracks that follow the same requirements as defined by the Business department for minors in business administration, management, or marketing.

The Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Music Technology combines professional studies in music with coursework in computer-based music notation, electronic music, recording, and studio production techniques. Additional coursework is drawn from the Communications and Computer Information Science departments in order to develop the student’s basic understanding of mass media and relevant computer technologies.

Students in both concentrations take Survey of Music Business and complete the degree with a 14-week internship in a music industry area of the student’s interest or intended employment. The internship is normally done during the final semester or summer after all other course work has been completed.

Students pursuing the business or technology concentrations must complete the music core curriculum for all Bachelor of Music degrees at MU, including theory, music history, keyboard skills, ensemble participation, instrumental or vocal private lessons, and secondary applied study. All students must pass the first piano proficiency and sophomore review and are required to perform at least once per year on the weekly Thursday afternoon music department recitals. Students completing a Bachelor of Music degree must also perform a solo recital in their senior year.

Students must successfully complete a live audition in an applied music area (instrumental or vocal) for admission into this program. The audition will include aural skills and music theory placement tests.

Rationale for change: 

The Chemistry and Physics program currently focuses its assessment protocols on junior, senior and recent program alumni.  And while, by all measures, our students are meeting or exceeding the assessment criteria we have established, there is still one vital piece or information we are missing.  We currently have no way to assess the science content knowledge and skills of the students coming into the Chemistry and Physics department at MU.  The creation of the new SCI 1100 Science Freshman orientation course will allow us to “close the loop” in our program assessment.  The new course, while including all of the topics currently found in UNV 1100, will include additional content specifically for chemistry and physics majors, and will also allow the program to collect baseline data to be used in our annual reports and program reviews (content knowledge, writing skills, oral presentation skills, organizational skills, etc.)

Rationale for change: 

We are proposing the addition of a mathematics concentration in the MSEd program (Secondary Education). There has been a steady stream of inquiries over the years into the existence of graduate math courses from local secondary math teachers. While local demand is probably too small to justify regularly scheduled graduate courses in mathematics, there seems to be a large market for online graduate math courses. There are a small number of online masters-level math education programs available, and only two that we can find in mathematics. Both math programs are at expensive private schools. Our math offerings, while targeted to high school and community college teachers, will be mathematics courses, and we are confident that the demand for such courses would be extremely high. If these courses are successful, Math and CIS would like to start an MA Mathematics program using the same pool of courses targeting secondary math teachers, who would like to teach at a community college.

Initial offerings will include MA 5508 (Stochastic Models), MA 5520 (Selected Topics), MA 5530 (Introduction to Manifold Geometry), MA 5560 (Abstract Algebra), and MA 5580 (Advanced Linear Algebra). MA 5520 may be repeated any number of times (since we would never offer the same topic twice).
