PROGRAM CHANGE: AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR
Rationale for change:
Change the African American
Studies minor curriculum to include our new course, AAS 1100
Introduction to African American Studies, and SOC 1121
Social Problems. Both courses have counted towards the minor
in the past, and need to be added to our program.
Old Degree and Program Title (attach an

New Degree and Program Title (attach a

POLICY INTERPRETATION CHANGE (SORT OF): 2ND YEAR
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Most BA programs (I believe all) have a
requirement that students EITHER have a minor OR have 2nd
year language proficiency. Most programs and advisors have
(correctly) interpreted this to mean that a student must
successfully complete the 2202 level of a foreign language
(2nd semester of the 2nd year).
However, it recently came to light that the past
interpretation has considered a student who completed the
2201 level (1st semester of the 2nd
year) as having met the requirement. Therefore, this an
unusual category for a CANa policy interpretation, not a
program change nor a policy change for the catalog. In
consultation with Senate Executive Committee (and the
Department of English and Modern Languages), this item is on
the CAN to reinforce the transparency of process and to
ensure that we all agree on the meaning of 2nd
year language proficiency. Therefore, the motion to be
considered at AAC (and then Senate, etc., if approved) is
the following:
MOTION: 2nd year
language proficiency means the successful completion of the
2202 level of a foreign language.
