 10.                        PROGRAM CHANGE: MUSIC

Rationale for change:             Compliance with NASM Standards

One of the NASM standards for General Education Competency states that student graduating with liberal arts degrees have:  “Understanding of and experience in one or more art forms other than music.”  Previously the BA program in Music had a requirement that satisfied this competency, but in the 120 hour program revision this requirement was eliminated.  The Music Department seeks to require that 3 credits within Block 6: General Education Electives be in the area of Art History, Art, or Theatre.  These course prefixes (ARH, ART, and THT) are currently listed in the catalogue as General Education Electives.

Old Degree and Program Title (attach an old ER):  Bachelor of Arts in Music

New Degree and Program Title (attach a new ER): Bachelor of Arts in Music

                  List all changes:

11.  PROGRAM CHANGE: MUSIC WITH ELECTIVE STUDIES IN BUSINESS

Rationale for change:

The music department seeks to add three course credits to the existing Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business. This will bring the program total number of credits from 117 to 120 (in the previous ER, MU 2220 - WESTERN MUSIC TO 1750 had been erroneously counted twice, under both Music and Humanities). This change will also satisfy a requirement set forth by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for a basic conducting course in all Bachelor of Music programs.

NASM guidelines recommend that for BM degrees at least 50% of the coursework be in the area of music. This change will bring the total number of music core credits from 59 to 62 out of 120.

List all changes:

  • ADD the following required course:
    • MU 2250 Basic Conducting (1 credit)
  • ADD the following elective course requirement:
    • 2 or more credits from any MU or MAP course(s)

12.                        PROGRAM CHANGE: MUSIC WITH EMPHASIS IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

Rationale for change:

The music department seeks to add three course credits to the existing Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Music Technology. This will bring the program total number of credits from 117 to 120 (in the previous ER, MU 2220 – WESTERN MUSIC TO 1750 was erroneously counted twice, under both music and humanities). This change will also satisfy a requirement set forth by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for a basic conducting course in all Bachelor of Music programs.

In addition, MU 1104 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY (1 credit) will become a requirement of this area of emphasis (this course was added last year to fill a need for a basic introductory course in music technology).

NASM guidelines recommend that for BM degrees at least 50% of the coursework be in the area of music. This change will bring the total number of music core credits from 59 to 61 out of 120.

List all changes:

  • ADD the following required courses:
    • MU 2250 Basic Conducting (1 credit)
    • MU 1104 Introduction to Music Technology (1 credit)
  • ADD the following elective course requirement:
    • Any MU or MAP course for one or more credits
