This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curricular actions. Please forward any comments or concerns in the next 10 days to the AAC chair, Jeffrey Bossworth , 206 Pinecrest Manor, ext. 4762.

1.     PROGRAM CHANGE: MINOR IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES

Rationale for change:   

Removing courses that are no longer being taught. and whose content is no longer relevant to African-American Studies. Adding new courses to the African-American Studies Minor (AASM) curriculum to strengthen the program.

List all changes:

 

Removing courses that are no longer being taught

·         ANH 2885 Health & Culture,

·         ANH 3301 World Cultures,

·         HST 3310 Afro-American Experience,

·         SOC 3306 Interracial Seminar. 

Removing a course whose content is no longer relevant to African-American Studies

  • PSY 3310 Social Psychology.

Adding courses as AASM electives

  • ANTH 2995 Medical Anthropology,
  • ANTH 4440 Anthropology of Religion.
  • PSY 4455 Stereotyping and Prejudice

Adding  AAS 1100 Introduction to African-American Studies under the Humanities section of the AASM. 

Adding  SOC 1121 Contemporary Social Problems under the Social Sciences/ Fine Art section of the AASM. 

Adding  SOC 4415 American Values in Conflict under the Capstone section of the AASM.

African-American Studies Minor

The African American Studies minor offers students the opportunity to study African American culture from a multidisciplinary perspective.  The minor seeks to prepare students to meet the challenges of an increasingly diverse workplace, society, and world.

 Program Requirements

Humanities - Choose 3 credit hours from the following:

ENG 2220 and ENG 3320 must have an African-American topic

Social Sciences or Fine Arts - Choose 3 credit hours from the following:

Capstone: Choose 3 credit hours from the following:

ENG 4401 and HST 4452 must have an African-American topic

Electives

Take three courses from the following:

  • ENG 3305 and ENG 3307 must have an African-American topic
  • SPE 3275 is by instructor permission
  • May also take any of the Core courses listed above not used to meet requirements
