1.      NEW PROGRAM: MILITARY SCIENCE

Rationale for program:  The Army ROTC program provides many benefits to the University and the students.  The program provides leadership and army focused training as well as practical experience to the students.  Scholarships are available for those who qualify as well as starting the students on a proven career path.  The program will add to the diversity of the campus as well as increasing the academic reach of the University.  A strong ROTC program can provide professional color guards for University events as well as participating in campus and community events.

Program Description for Catalog:  Military Science is a course of study that is independent of an undergraduate's major or the school the student attends. The program teaches students the leadership skills and knowledge they will need to be commissioned as officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.  Military Science is available to all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of their major.  Students attend the first two years of study without incurring any obligation to serve in the military. The regular course of study includes military science classes, which develop leadership, confidence, maturity, responsibility and dependability.

Program Objectives:  The purpose of ROTC is to educate and train leaders of character to serve the Nation.  The program trains young men and women to be Army officers for the Active Army, United States Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard.

 

Impact on other programs:  None

 

Faculty qualifications:  The United States Army will provide all instructors for the courses.

 

Physical facility support requirements:  The program will require office space, classroom space, and a location to conduct physical training.  The office space has already been provided by Mansfield University.  The classroom space will only be required for a few hours a week during class time.  To conduct physical training the program will need access to a gymnasium and an area to run during the early morning hours three times a week.

The course explores the responsibilities and impact of leadership and the rules, customs and traditions of military service.
