1. NEW PROGRAM: MILITARY SCIENCE Rationale for program: The Army ROTC program provides many benefits to the University and the students. The program provides leadership and army focused training as well as practical experience to the students. Scholarships are available for those who qualify as well as starting the students on a proven career path. The program will add to the diversity of the campus as well as increasing the academic reach of the University. A strong ROTC program can provide professional color guards for University events as well as participating in campus and community events. Degree and Program Title (attach an ER, course titles, and rationale): Program Description for Catalog: Military Science is a course of study that is independent of an undergraduate's major or the school the student attends. The program teaches students the leadership skills and knowledge they will need to be commissioned as officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. Military Science is available to all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of their major. Students attend the first two years of study without incurring any obligation to serve in the military. The regular course of study includes military science classes, which develop leadership, confidence, maturity, responsibility and dependability. Program Objectives: The purpose of ROTC is to educate and train leaders of character to serve the Nation. The program trains young men and women to be Army officers for the Active Army, United States Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard. Impact on other programs: None Faculty qualifications: The United States Army will provide all instructors for the courses. Physical facility support requirements: The program will require office space, classroom space, and a location to conduct physical training. The office space has already been provided by Mansfield University. The classroom space will only be required for a few hours a week during class time. To conduct physical training the program will need access to a gymnasium and an area to run during the early morning hours three times a week. 2. NEW COURSE: MS 1110: Leadership and Personal Development Purpose and Nature of Course: This course focuses on the military as a profession and examines its organization, ethics and values. The course explores the responsibilities and impact of leadership and the rules, customs and traditions of military service. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of land navigation, physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, first aid and public speaking. Attendance at the Leader’s Training Course gives a student credit for missing the first two years of ROTC. In addition, graduate students with two years remaining until graduation may also apply. Attendance at the Leader’s Training Course gives a student credit for missing the first two years of ROTC and may qualify them for a two year Army ROTC Scholarship. Cadets are trained and evaluated on the full range of leadership skills and attributes. Written and oral communication skills, motivational behavior, interpersonal skills, administrative procedures, decision-making and military field skills are emphasized. NEW COURSE: MS 3330: Leader Development and Assessment Course Internship Purpose and Nature of Course: This program is a paid 29-day advanced military internship at Fort Lewis, Washington, which is mandatory for all students who have completed MS310 and MS320. Emphasis is on the training, assessment and development of students as leaders and soldiers prior to their senior year. The environment is highly structured and demanding, with a focus on leadership at the small unit level under varied and challenging conditions. LDAC performance weighs heavily in the selection process that determines the specialty and job opportunities available to the student upon graduation and subsequent commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
