Biblehimer) MOTION ONE: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Social Work Anthropology, and Sociology: Action #1: Course Deletion Course to be deleted: SWK 260 Course Practicum Course to be deleted: SWK 250 Social Work Skills Action #2: New Course Request Course: SWK 321 Child Welfare Purpose and Nature of Course: To provide students with an introduction to the field of child welfare. Action #3: Course Change
Action #4: Program Change Proposal Program: Anthropology/Sociology major Rationale for Change: This is a change in the degree requirements for the Anthropology/Sociology major to reflect our faculty's strengths in research methods. The addition of the research methods courses will give our graduates skills for the social science research job market. List of changes: Add SOC 307: Social Research I and SOC 308: Social Research II to required courses on the right side of the ER. Delete 3 credits of required social science/humanities courses at the 300/ 400 level.

MOTION TWO: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Communication & Theatre: Action #1: Program Change: Change the program description in the catalog. Purpose for the change: The program description will now include the requirement of keeping a portfolio of an organized compilation of writing samples, evidence of involvement in appropriate activities and updated resumes. New Catalog Description: All Communication and Theatre majors who are preparing to register for classes for their second semester and remaining semesters at Mansfield University will be required to have a current portfolio reviewed by their advisor. The contents of the portfolio are described in the Department Student Handbook. Action #2: Program Change Rationale for change: As part of a new marketing plan to increase majors, we propose changing the name of the Speech major to a "Communication" major. This title more accurately reflects the nature of the major, since it is not a degree in public speaking. We feel that eliminating the perception that this is a degree in public speaking will help to attract more majors. Most degrees in human communication are entitled "communication degrees." Action #3: New Course: COM 485 Small Group Communication Purpose and nature of the course: To allow students to study small group communication. This is a major area of research in the communication field, and most universities include this course in their curriculum. Adding this course will give students an additional elective in the field and help the communication degree become more marketable.

MOTION THREE: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Geography & Geology: Action #1: Course Change to GEG 375 Geographic Information Systems. Purpose and Nature of the change: Change number for GEG 375 to GEG 270 because the new number more appropriately conveys our desire that students take this during their sophomore year. Old Course Number: 375; New Course Number 270 Action #2: Change credits for RPL 496 Purpose and nature of the change: Change the credits for RPL 496 Planning Internship from 12 to 3-12. This change will allow for a wider range of internship possibilities. Action #3: Program Deletion: BSE Social Studies Comprehensive (Geography Emphasis) Rationale for elimination: Place this program in moratorium. The state has eliminated this program. Impact on other programs: there may be a small reduction in the number of students in some Geography courses. It will not impact staffing or course offerings in any way. Action #4: Program Deletion: Geography B.A. Rationale for elimination: Place this program in moratorium. The department no longer intends to offer this program. Impact on other programs: No effect anticipated. This program will be supplanted by the B.S. Geography. No courses will be changed, added or deleted as a result of placing this program in moratorium, nor will it impact the load of any faculty member. Action #5: Program Change: Geography B.S. Rationale for change: The geography B.A. has been placed in moratorium. This program is intended to supplant it. MOTION FOUR: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Health Sciences, Nutrition: Action #1: New Course Proposal Purpose and Nature of Course: To introduce Mansfield University Students to the nutrient needs and food habits of people of different countries, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds. Prefix: DIT300 Course Title: Cultural Nutrition and Food Credit(s): 3 Undergraduate Course Description for Catalog: A study of the nutrient needs and food habits of individuals from various countries and ethnic backgrounds. Action #2: New Course Request Purpose and Nature of Course: An in-depth look into nutrition and exercise and how they work together to prevent chronic disease. Prefix: DIT 220 Course Title: Nutrition and Exercise Credits: 3 Undergraduate Action #3: New Program Proposal: Nutrition Minor Rationale for program: Students have been requesting a nutrition minor. Until this semester, there was only one tenure track professor in nutrition. A second tenure track professor was hired this year to teach nutrition courses. Consequently there is adequate faculty to support teaching and advising students in this minor. Program Description for Catalog: The nutrition minor provides the student with a strong background in nutrition as related to the student's field of study. This minor is especially suited to students in health care fields other than nutrition, students who wish to work with eating disordered individuals, future educators and coaches, future journalists, and anyone else who may need a strong background in nutrition. This minor consists of 18 credits minimum. It includes DIT 211, 305, 314, 3 credits selected from DIT 220, 300, 316, or 325 and 6 credits selected from DIT 330, 401, 402, 417, 420. Program Objectives: The student will be able to:
Impact on other programs: This program is unlikely to have any negative impacts on other programs offered at Mansfield University. This minor is expected to have a positive impact on the nutrition and dietetics and sports nutrition programs at Mansfield University.

MOTION FIVE: AAC moves that the following curricular change be made for the Department of Health Sciences, Nursing Action: Course deletions: NUR 453 Creative Interventions in Nursing Rationale: Courses have not been taught in the past 8 years.

MOTION SIX: AAC moves that the following curricular change be made for the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation: Action: New Course: HPE 199 Intercollegiate Athletic Participation Purpose: To provide those students participating in
intercollegiate athletics 1 credit of health and physical
education. Discussion: If approved, would this present contractual difficulties? M. Lane had indicated that, because other universities were doing this, there would be a way to work this out. It would be assigned to a faculty member, although it was not a "course" per se. It would meet the Wellness Block criteria. Clarification was sought on the meaning of "third season." B. Sabol indicated that a student would show some commitment to the team by not receiving credit until the third year. Will quality points be awarded? As proposed, yes, a letter grade would be assigned. The purpose is to help our athletic teams and keep athletes out there. How is this different from the Mountie Marching Band credits that are available to students for up to three credits? Tuition would be paid for the credit. How would a letter grade be assigned? A grade would be awarded for athletic participation, not skills. As long as student is out there participating, a grade of A would be assigned. How is this different from taking a 1-credit golf course for credit? A course in golf involves learning a skill where this awards credit for athletic participation. S. Thornsley offered a substitute motion. SUBSTITUTE MOTION: students may acquire a total of 3 credits; no quality points would be assigned (S/U would be awarded); students would be eligible to sign up for a course in whatever semester they participated in the intercollegiate sport; if a student wishes to withdraw from a sport, a W would be assigned; a student may participate in different sports. (Thornsley/Davis). Discussion of Substitute Motion: If no quality points are awarded, would the professor in charge receive credit? This is an administrative question, but S/U is considered a grade. For example, Music does this. Would there be one faculty member assigned to each sport? This also is an administrative issue. In one semester, there may be as many as 100 or 200 students enrolled. The substitute motion appears to give students more latitude; B. Sabol indicated that students deserve a grade. Will motions passed today become effective in Fall 2002 or Spring 2003 (as originally requested)? How would a student remove a U for a grade? U grades do not affect QPA in any way. B. Sabol called for a hand vote. AMENDED MOTION PASSED, with 21 voting for and three opposed. AMENDMENT TO THE AMENDED MOTION: It was proposed that the new policy become effective for Fall 2002 (Sabol/Longoria). Discussion: none. AMENDMENT PASSED. FINAL MOTION: New Course: HPE 199 Intercollegiate Athletic Participation; students may acquire a total of 3 credits; no quality points would be assigned (S/U would be awarded); students would be eligible to sign up for a course in whatever semester they participated in the intercollegiate sport; if a student wishes to withdraw from a sport, a W would be assigned; a student may participate in different sports; the new policy will become effective for Fall 2002. Discussion: Could a student remove a U if he/she participated in a second sport? The first grade always remains on the transcript but it could be repeated. If a student goes out for a sport, pays for the one-credit course and the coach doesn't put the student on the team, the student could withdraw by the ninth week of the semester. MOTION APPROVED.
MOTION SEVEN: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Psychology: Action #1: Course Change: PSY 201 Tests and Measurements Purpose: Change pre-requisites from "MA 125, PSY 101 is recommended" to "PSY 101 and MA 125, or permission of instructor". Action #2: Course Change: PSY Experimental Design I Purpose: Change pre-requisites from "MA 125, PSY 101 is recommended" to "PSY 101 and MA 125, or permission of instructor". Action #3: Change Course Description: PSY 290 Life Span Development Rationale: To clarify and make course description consistent with teaching practices. Description: Surveys empirical findings regarding the interactive aspects of human behavioral development from conception through old age. Includes examination of major theories regarding physical, social, emotional, and mental development. Emphasizes normal development as it is experience at each stage of the human life span. Discussion: Regarding Action #18, the proposed course description implies that students will be introduced to issues. It appears that the course will be more survey than a 400-level course, and Women Studies opposes this change. The issue of academic freedom was addressed; do we have the right to tell instructors what to focus on? Perhaps covering the same topics from different perspectives is positive. The course is also cross-listed at the graduate level. S. Brown indicated that the graduate listing for the course will be addressed in the future. It was clarified that Women Studies is putting the department on notice that the course could potentially be dropped from the Women Studies program based on the proposed course description. Regarding actions that use the "upper division standing" terminology, concern was raised with how this is defined. The question was called. MOTION APPROVED. NOTE: The above Psychology curricular changes were approved by Senate with the understanding that the phrase "upper division standing" wherever it occurs in the requested changes will be reviewed for clarity and intent by the Psychology Department in consultation with the Provost's Office.
MOTION EIGHT: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Chemistry and Physics: Action # 1: Program Deletion: B.S. Chemistry- Biochemical Concentration Rationale for elimination: Deleted as a stand-alone program and consolidated with the B.S. Chemistry program as separate track sharing with B.S. Chemistry a common core but diverging at the upper level. Action #2: Program Change: B.S. Chemistry Purpose: To consolidate the B.S. Chemistry and B.S. Biochemistry majors into a single program with a common core but divergent upper-level requirements. This change will result in the following listing in the catalogue: B.S. Chemistry (Chemistry). Action #3: Program Change: B.S. Physics and B.S. Pre-Engineering Rationale for change: To amalgamate the B.S. Physics and B.S. Physics, Pre-engineering major into a single program with a common core but disparate upper-division requirements. List of Changes:
Action #4: Program Deletion B.S. Pre-Engineering Rationale: This program is being deleted as a stand-alone program and consolidated with the B.S. Physics program as a separate track sharing with B.S. Physics a common core but differing at the upper-division and Biochemistry Concentration.

MOTION NINE: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Biology: Action #1: Course Deletions: BI 377 Food Microbiology &endash; no longer required by any program BSC 119 Human Anatomy - Course not been offered in ten years. BSC 120 Human Physiology - Course not been offered in ten years. Action #2: Program Deletion: BA Biology Rationale for elimination: Biology plans to terminate the BA Biology Program. There have been very few students (2 in 6 years) interested in the BA Biology Program. The first step is to place the program in moratorium for 3 years. After this time, the program will be eliminated.

MOTION TEN: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Languages and Literature: Action #1: Program Deletion: A.S. in Professional Writing Rationale: The small number of students applying for the A.S. in Professional Writing does not justify maintaining a program. A majority of students who enrolled in the program decided to work toward a four year degree. Action #2: Program Change: English B.S.E. Rationale for change: The department proposes a more structured program with an emphasis on fundamental skills to best prepare our students to excel in Literary Studies as it exists today: a discipline that has become more diverse, professionalized, and outcome-based. The new program will allow students to acquire, earlier and with more efficacy, a stronger and more coherent foundation for the study of English. This more foundational, developmental, and updated program would provide our majors with more direction, qualifications, and viability in terms of employment and advanced degrees. List Changes: DELETE: ENG 353 17th Cent Brit Lit Action #3: Program Change: English B.A. Rationale for change: The department proposes a more structured program with an emphasis on fundamental skills to best prepare our students to excel in Literary Studies as it exists today: a discipline that has become more diverse, professionalized, and outcome-based. The new program will allow students to acquire, earlier and with more efficacy, a stronger and more coherent foundation for the study of English. This more foundational, developmental, and updated program would provide our majors with more direction, qualifications, and viability in terms of employment and advanced degrees. Action #4: Course Change: ENG 351 Sixteenth Century British Literature Change Course Title: English Renaissance Literature Action #5: Course Change: ENG 356 Restoration and Neoclassic British Literature Nature of the change: Change title to a new title that
will be clearer to our students. Action #6: Course Change: ENG 401 &endash; Seminar in English Studies Purpose of Change: Revision of the catalog course description to better reflect its role as a research-based capstone course for the major. Action #7: New Course Request: ENG 130 Introduction to Literary Studies Purpose and nature of course: Like other disciplines, the study of English requires a foundation of skills and knowledge common to many areas of study within the discipline. A current concern for many faculty and students in our department is the lack of a course that would give students in the major a common background in literary terms, skills in analysis and explication, an understanding of the shape of literary and critical studies, and a stronger sense of shared experience among one's peers. Establishing such a foundation course will give our students a common background of skills and knowledge that will be built upon in survey, period, genre, and author courses. Advantages will include more cohesiveness among majors and a reduced need for instructors of upper-division courses to include redundant coverage of basic skills. Introduction to Literary Studies will be more discipline specific and skills-oriented than a basic course like Introduction to Literature. In addition, a single gateway course will provide a consistent curriculum and skills base, taught by a full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty member. Currently Introduction to Literature funnels students into the major with a general, not specific, introduction to the discipline, and with widely varied exposure to disciplinary skills and knowledge, perhaps taught by a temporary faculty member who might not be available to advise or mentor the student in subsequent semesters. Action #8: New Course Request: ENG 376 Major Genre Purpose and nature of course: Although various genre courses have been offered with some regularity as Special Topics in Literature courses (ENG 220 or ENG 320), currently we do not have a specific course number designated for the study of genre. Because genre is a vital area of literary study, categorizing genre courses under the special topics designation is misleading and serves no clear purpose. Instead, the Department of Languages & Literature proposes the creation of a "Major Genre" course as a new three-credit requirement for the major. This new requirement, part of our proposed changes to the BA/BSE program in English, will raise the profile of genre study among our course offerings, and allow our majors explore various genres (poetry, drama, the novel, short fiction, nonfiction prose, film) through courses offered on a regular, rotating basis. Such courses will be a useful complement to their survey, period, and author courses, and regular offerings will allow students to plan their semesters more efficiently. Action #9: New Course Request: ENG 385 Major Author Purpose and Nature of Course: Although major author courses have been offered with some regularity as Senior Seminars (ENG 401) and occasionally as Special Topics courses (ENG 320), the Department of Languages & Literature believes its majors will be better served by a separate, required 300-level course that focuses on a major author other than Shakespeare. A major author requirement will provide English majors (and other interested students) with the experience of studying in detail an author's work (and the criticism of that work); this is the next logical step in a sequential program that first introduces students to literary study in general, then offers broad surveys in American and British literature, followed by more narrowly defined period courses. In addition, because the skills and knowledge acquired in the Major Author course are preparatory with respect to the research-based Senior Seminar capstone course, the Department believes that the Major Author requirement should be completed prior to the Senior Seminar. Because Shakespeare occupies a unique place in the canon of English literature, a separate Shakespeare requirement continues to be desirable. The addition of a Major Author course will complement the Shakespeare requirement, expanding the opportunity for our students to study in depth the work of other significant contributors to the history of literature. Action #10: Course Deletion: ENG 353 Reason for the deletion: The Department of Languages and Literature wishes to reduce the number of British Period courses to better reflect current enrollment and staffing levels. The content from this course will be combined with the 16th Century British Literature course, reducing the number of British period courses from 7 to 6. The new single course, ENG 351, English Renaissance Literature, 1500 to 1660, is a more typical offering for this literary time span, especially at smaller liberal arts institutions the size of Mansfield.

MOTION ELEVEN: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Education and Special Education: Action #1: Course Change: SPE 252 Inclusion of Diverse Learners Purpose and nature of the change: Change number to SPE 275 Action #2: Program Change: Change name of degree from B.S.E. Social Studies Comprehensive: History Emphasis to B.S.E. Social Studies: History (for certification in Citizenship Education) Rationale for change: The Secondary Education Social Studies Comprehensive certificate has been eliminated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The proposed revisions will prepare students who select the history emphasis to meet competency standards for the Citizenship Education certificate that will authorize them to teach history, geography, political science, and economics in grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania. Students must now complete the equivalent of the B.A. degree in their major area and demonstrate competencies in all of the collateral areas.
Discussion: The History Department lodged reservations with Action #2. Three credits of HST were moved to the gen ed block in humanities, thus reducing credits required on the right side of the ER from 36 to 33. The subject area requires less than the pedagogical area, thus creating a philosophical issue. PDE requires that students take the same HST courses as BA majors and they still do. PDE also now requires two MA courses. The problem with PDE is their desire for competent teachers, graduated in four years with 120 credits. Students are getting squeezed. Education should rethink their education courses or go to a five year program, it was suggested. There are approximately 50 students in HST BSE who will be affected. The question was called and a hand vote was necessary to determine the outcome. MOTION APPROVED, with 13 voting in favor, 5 voting against and 2 abstentions.
MOTION TWELVE: AAC moves that the following curricular changes be made for the Department of Music: Action #1: Course Deletions: MAP 111 Intro to Piano Action #2: Course Changes: change numbers MU 544 to 641 Recent trends in Music Education Action #3: Add or eliminate pre-requisites MAP 114 Action #4: New Courses: MU 561 Jazz Improv I Action #5: Course Change: Change credits from 3 cr to 2 cr. MU 663 Jazz Materials and Techniques Action #6: Program Change: Add Sophomore Review for all music majors Purpose: The purpose of the review is to serve as a benchmark examination for all music majors. It is designed from a positive perspective, assisting the student in recognizing their strengths and weaknesses. While it may simply confirm for most students that they are on track, it will also identify students with deficiencies so that we may better direct them towards improvement and coordinate this effort among the entire department. This review will be combined with regular checks of student's grades and progress each semester during their first three semesters, and therefore serve as the capstone of their first two years. Upon satisfactory completion of the sophomore review, the department and student could be more assured of their continued success. Ultimately, the sophomore review would probably "weed out" a few of our weaker students. Whether or not this weeding out means a recommendation to pursue another course of study or remediation in music is outlined later in this presentation, but overall, the process will increase retention. For example, even the student who we recommend pursue another course of study will find this out quickly and in a timely fashion. Regular contact with advisors, this review and semester progress check will provide the student ample time to digest the needs for changes and our own counseling centers can be used to direct the student towards a more appropriate career. This is not meant to be an obstacle to the students, but rather a positive assessment. It is meant to assist them in their development and provide us with documentation on their success or failure.
Discussion: Regarding Action #5, the rationale for changing courses from 3 to 2 credits is for consistency with graduate credit. Regarding Action #6, the program would weed out students and this could be a problem for retention. An overwhelming number of Music students are enrolled in professional degrees, and similar benchmarks exist in other professional programs such as Nursing and Education. The specific details are outlined in the document addressing sophomore reviews. MOTION APPROVED.
