Discussion: W. Keeth asked for clarification as to why not eliminate PSY 3325 and TRT 3350 entirely. M. Gabala explained it gives more electives for students. These classes have management emphasis and are related. W. Keeth asked why foreign languages wouldn’t be considered. M. Gabala stated that these courses have managerial emphases and business theory. BSC 121 Anatomy & Physiology I and MA 128 College Algebra each with a grade of at least “C-“ and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 should be changed with a grade of at least “C“ and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.3.
Discussion: A lot of discussion about this motion. T. Elsasser made the point that because of the system in place for registration, if a student is undeclared in their first year, and decides to change majors in their second year, they can’t get a seat in this course to earn the grade needed to enter the major. There simply aren’t enough seats, and so logistically, if you don’t enter in these majors, you can rarely go through the requirements to get into them. M. Lane explained that there is a retention problem—if they leave after they take that first course, then it is negative retention. If they take the course and earn a good grade, they have a better chance of success. E. O’Dell asked what system is in place to help students be successful. F. Blanco said tutors. M. Lane said that the seats have doubled; however, there was a lot of discussion stating that seats are not available. Motion carried, 5 opposed.

Motion # 19
AAC moves to approve the New Course Request for XRT 1107 Fundamentals of Radiologic Science and Health Care
Purpose and Nature of Course: To instruct students about fundamentals of radiology and general principles of health care.
No discussion. Motion carried.

Motion # 20
AAC moves to approve the New Course: XRT 1108 Medical Terminology for the Radiographer
Purpose and Nature of Course: Course content will include the word-building process, medical abbreviations, medical terminology associated with body systems, and terms related to radiology and medical reports
No discussion. Motion carried.

Motion # 21
AAC moves to approve the Program Change: A.A.S. degree, Respiratory Therapy

List all changes:

  1. The prerequisite minimum grade point average for the RTH 1101 Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, RTH 1102 Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II, and RTH 1199 Clinical Practicum I courses will be increased from 2.0 to 2.3.
  2. Require a minimum grade of “C” in BSC 1121 and MA 1128.

Discussion: T. Elsasser made same points as in motion #18—seats are not available and students cannot get into these majors unless they enroll as first year students in them. W. Keeth said this could work against retention of numbers. M. Materese said if they have numbers but not quality, the program suffers. Motion carried, 3 opposed.

Motion # 22
AAC moves to approve the Program Change: A.A.S. degree, Radiology Technology

List all changes:

  1. PHY 1165 Physics for Applied Health Sciences will be dropped (3 credits)
  2. New Medical Terminology for the Radiographer course will be added (2 credits)
  3. New Fundamentals of Radiologic Science and Health Care course will be added
    (1 credit)

No discussion. Motion carried.

Motion # 23
AAC moves to approve the Course Change: CHM 1102 Organic and Biochemistry
Make the prerequisite "CHM 1101 or permission of instructor."
Changing the catalog prerequisite for CHM 1102 from "CHM 1101" to "CHM 1101 or permission of instructor" would allow more students to take this laboratory science course.
No discussion. Motion carried.

New Business

  1. A. E. O’Dell/M. Zelkowitz moved to hear the prepared statement from SGA. Motion carried. The speech is as follows:

    Rally/ University Senate Speech
    November 18, 2004
    SGA President: Elizabeth O’Dell

Issue: Loss of Student Vote and voice on all curricular matters, which means that Student will have no voice in regards to the courses of study offered by Mansfield University

Arguments: - As our slogan says we are a small university with BIG opportunities. One of those opportunities that MU offers that other schools do not is that we have big say in what goes on in our day to day lives as students. There is a feeling of personal stake in what we are here for. We have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and staff and learn from them. That is the beauty of a small school; we have the ability to have interaction with our faculty and staff. If you take away our voting power in matters of curriculum then you take away the greatest opportunity that we have here as students. - We understand that there only a few students take advantage of that opportunity. However, if you look around at your colleagues, how many of them are not apathetic themselves? We are at an institution whose focus is supposed to be on civic engagement and thus the elimination of apathy among the students, I think that perhaps the focus would be better served on faculty and staff. Now I am not going to pretend to be the guru of Leadership, but I have had my share of leadership experience in my short life and I have learned one important thing…leading is doing. If you want someone to do something you have to be willing to do it yourselves. Lead by example and you would be amazed at the people who will follow you. - Education, we are here for an education. Though we respect that our Faculty have had years of experience that surpass ours and have the degrees and honors to prove it that doesn’t mean that you are above us. We respect you and we would hope that you would us. We may not know what each class’s purpose and significance are but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to know. Our fear is that if you take away our vote and only faculty have a say then you will loose the voice of the students, why offer a course that no one is going to take when you could spend the time and effort and a class that would enroll and keep students. We are students, we live together, we eat together, we walk to class together, and we have a connection with each other that no faculty or staff could ever have simply because of the circumstances that we are in. Faculty may think that they know what is best of the students, and again we appreciate that you care about us, but we are not incompetent. Give us the chance to show you that we really can make you proud. A great teacher is surpassed by their students in their achievements. Let us surpass us, teach us how and we will make you proud. But please don’t clip our wings and never give us the chance to fly. - We have a few compromises that we have come up with that we hope will help us all work together. Again we just want the opportunity to learn, we want to work with you not against you. We are all here as a community and we want to make sure that we are not a separated one.

    Assembly applauded presentation.

    M. Zelkowitz moved to have an open meeting for faculty/staff/students before the next meeting. Motion carried.

F Blanco stated that minors are dropped in the same way as majors (through the department or by the administration). This was in response to a question by A. Longoria at the last meeting.

    W. Keeth asked if we could get administration added into the flow charts on those decisions. This was referred to AAC.

    T. Murphy clarified that administration can bring those initiatives.

    D. Beckhtel asked questions of the union rep. related to the constitutional amendment.
