  A.

Academic Affairs (F. Blanco)

Motion # 1

AAC moves to approve the New Course GRA 1101 Introduction to Graphic Design

Purpose and Nature of Course: To acquaint students with tools of graphic design.

No discussion. Motion carried.

Motion # 2

AAC moves to approve the New Course GRA 1102 History of Graphic Design

Purpose and Nature of Course: To acquaint students with the historical development of graphic design and to offer basic instruction in graphic design techniques

Discussion: B. Holtman asked if this was totally new. Yes. Motion Carried.

Motion # 3

AAC moves to approve the New Course GRA 2201 Computer Graphics I

Purpose and Nature of Course: This course is designed to familiarize students with basic 2D and 3D graphic design concepts and to acquaint students with appropriate computer software applications for various projects

Discussion: This is a new prefix GRA. It will be a combine department between Art and Communication. Dual track program. Print graphics track in Art. Motion graphics in Comm. M. Zelkowitz said it is a concern of the Art dept. as to who will be the faculty. L. Wright said we need 2 faculty members for both tracks to go forward. The program isn’t scheduled to go forward until Fall of 06. D. Seigart said P.Keller supports this program. The technology fee will help to fund it. Program has to go through Board of Trustees and PASSHE. [NOTE: Discussion is not germane to this motion, but because of the order of motions, the parliamentarian allowed the discussion to continue.] T. Murphy—do we have resources and commitment? J. Halstead—good to ask questions, but we also need to launch new programs. K. Thorne—will we be penalized for what the 2 new faculty will do to the student/faculty ratio? J.Murphy—what is the terminal degree? MFA or PHD? Will this hurt our FTE? T. Murphy—process should be more faculty centered. M. Zelkowitz—they would like to see a guarantee of new faculty. J. Bosworth—B. Kutbay has concerns about program. T. Elsasser said he meets with a lot of students who want this program, and we don’t have it. Reminded everyone that all we are doing is saying that these are the right courses for this program. L. Wright said even if we approve today, 1 track might not go forward right away. Motion Carried.

Motion # 4

AAC moves to approve the New Course GRA 3301 Computer Graphics II

Purpose and Nature of Course: Continued study in 2D and 3D graphic Design and animation graphics techniques

No Discussion, Motion Carried.

Motion # 5

AAC moves to approve the New Course COM 4406 Digital Video Editing

Purpose and Nature of Course: preparation in digital editing techniques

Discussion: Will digital editing techniques identified continue to be updated? Yes. Motion carried.

Motion # 6

AAC moves to approve the New Course GRA 4410 Internship

Purpose and Nature of Course: To provide a professional work-related experience for qualified seniors Credit(s): 6-15 Undergraduate
Discussion: Must have 90 credits. S. Brown—a student can get 1/3 of preparation through internship. L. Wright said that is not compatible with other programs. GPA required of 2.5 overall, 3.0 in major to get the internship. W. Keeth bringing in new majors brings in new GE demands—should one of these be a gen. ed course? L. Wright—the person hired should be teaching Oral Comm. Or trade off with someone else. Motion carried.

Motion # 7

AAC moves to approve the New Program: B.S. in Graphic Design

Rationale for program: The addition of this new program will allow students who are interested in careers in graphic design to formally pursue a course of study.

Discussion: K. Thorne said print media still runs on Mac and campus doesn’t support that. L. Rashidi—what about faculty who are already overloaded w/ gen. ed? Now they’ll have more students. C. Burns said there will be a trade off in majors rather than an increase in population. M. Zelkowitz—personally in support. Concerned about overload because of popularity of the program. Motion carried.

Information Technology (M.-D. Schmid)

  • The Mansfield I.T. Division has started the implementation of the Microsoft Outlook messaging client and Microsoft Exchange server for faculty and staff. (Students and general email accounts will not migrate to Exchange – they will remain on the present Imail system.)
  • A mobile classroom of 40 wireless laptops, printers and access points were delivered to Elliot for use as a Gen Ed instruction tool.
  • Wireless has begun to be rolled out across campus to public areas. A wireless hotspot exists in AHUB and in Manser Food Court at this time. Plans are to finish Alumni Hall and begin North Hall over the summer. We are also working on having an external hotspot in South Hall Mall by Fall 2005.
  • The last of the emergency Blue Light safety phones was installed in front of Memorial Hall about 10 days ago. This completes the project that has been ongoing for the last year.
  • A change has been made as of today in Geographic Responsibility of Technicians, due to the shift of people from South Hall to Doane and to Hemlock and a vastly increased PC to Technician ratio in the last year in other areas. To reach your technician – as always – call the Help Desk and describe the problem. If the Help desk cannot assist you, a ticket is created for the appropriate technician. You can see which technician is responsible for your building by going to the IT web page and clicking on Client Services or http://it.mnsfld.edu/client
  • BlackBoard seems to have settled down in the last week. There are a number of suggestions that have been passed on to the Sytec team for service improvement and we look forward on having some of the issues that have been brought up with the product resolved. Tamela continues to meet via phone conference on Mondays and Andy has taken the following list of concerns to Harrisburg as well. Please continue to make your problems known to Tamela.
  • The Campus Management Project (SAP) has finished the Blueprint phase and will be moving into realization, which begins to flesh out details of how the pieces will work. Sytec is actively recruiting campus personnel as team members to work in Harrisburg on this project.
  • Mansfield is participating in a beta release of a new product from Datatel called e-Advising. The product would include pre-scheduling/advising of a core of courses for a student’s career at Mansfield and block registration for that list of courses with the advisor’s approval. Records will determine this next week on when we might move forward with this product. We are feeling that Spring registration may be very optimistic to have everyone notified of what to expect (web screens will change). Francis Craig has viewed the product as a part of a 3 day visit from Datatel in mid-January to the campus.

  • Registration opens March. 7 for summer and March 28 for fall.
  • Too many students not checking their university email. Please announce this.
  • S. Brown—do students know we have to report them for non-attendance? Yes, they are told at orientation.
  • L. Rashidi—is it possible for the registration software to block courses they aren’t qualified for to keep people from taking up seats? Not now, but that is on the list.
