AAC Motions of Dec. 6, 2005 to Senate

School Library and Information Technologies

  1. Course Delete: LSC 5560: Seminar and Internship in School Librarianship (1-4 credits)
    Discussion:
    J. Murphy: In APC concern about the load (P.Keller). Was that ever resolved? Pete requested we pass it and if it broke the budget, it would be stopped at Provost’s level. Part of issue is caused by part-time faculty. Denise: Issue w/regard to transcripts b/c of confusion with students from different states. Breaking out the courses into 1-credit sections will clarify. Students will take what they need.
Suggestion from M. Renner: Four motions are a package, so we need to vote on the entire package.
  2. New Course: LSC 5561 Seminar in School Librarianship (1 credit) - online
Course Description: This one (1) credit course allows time for the student to reflect, to assess his or her professional growth, and to create an electronic portfolio that represents their educational progress and their plans for professional development.
  3. New Course: LSC 5562 Residency in School Librarianship (1 credit)
Course Description: This one (1) credit course will occur during the spring and fall semesters only. Students who are seeking Pennsylvania certification are required to complete this course. Students from other states may or may not be required to complete a residency. It is the responsibility of out-of-state students to ascertain whether or not their state department of education will require the completion of the residency. It is important that all out- of-state students contact their Mansfield Student Advisor to make sure that they will have the appropriate credits and courses to earn certification in their own state. For those students taking LSC5562 during the spring semester, residency is held near the end of June. For those taking LSC5562 in fall, the residency is usually held near the end of October or the beginning of November. While the preferred site will be Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, other sites may be used depending upon the geographic locations of the students in any one semester. The residency allows students to broaden their understanding of how the competencies that they have developed during the program fit together to create an efficient and effective school library media specialist. Students will be given various opportunities to demonstrate their achievement of the standards as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and their readiness to be recommended for certification. This experience will also allow students to form a bond and create a circle of peers that may turn into life-long friendships.
Note: Description will be reduced to four sentences. Jannis contacted Doris and Jane.
  4. New Course: LSC 5563 Practicum in School Librarianship (2 credits)
Course Description: This two (2) credit course will occur during the spring and fall semesters only. Students who are seeking certification must complete a 100-hour practicum/internship to be served in a local school library. It is the responsibility of the non- Pennsylvania student to check with their own state department of education to determine whether there are other requirements that must be met in order to use reciprocity.
  5. Program Change: Delete LSC5560,
Add new courses LSC 5561, LSC 5562 and LSC 5563

    Discussion:
Rationale for change: In order to facilitate ease of registration and to increase the accuracy of the information on student transcripts,5560 required course? Yes. Are 1, 2, 3 alternatives? No. If you delete the whole course, and there is only one they take of the new courses, there could be a problem. Student need for courses depends on respective state requirements. Is there a program description that explains this? Yes. Does this leave free electives? There are more courses offered than are required to complete the program. Flexible design is needed due to the individual state requirements.

Motion carries as amended for items 1-5.

Business and Economics

  1. Course Deletion: ACC 3351 Cost Accounting II
Rationale for deletion: Course has not been offered for at least 3 years.
    Discussion:
Are these part of depts. Efforts to seek accreditation? MG: No, standards require these. 3351 is more a graduate-level course.
    Motion carries.
  2. Course Change; ACC 3311 Intermediate Accounting II
    Purpose and nature of change:
Change prerequisite: from ACC 3310 to Acc 1111 to make requirements consistent with knowledge level needed to complete ACC 3311.
    Motion carries.
  3. New Course
ACC 3370 Fraud Examination 3 credits
    Purpose and Nature of Course:
An elective course to provide students, especially in accounting and criminal justice, an awareness of various types of fraud schemes, techniques in preventing fraud and approaches to detect fraud.
    Course Description for Catalog:
This course is designed to provide managers, investigators and forensic accountants with an appreciation for the extent and nature of fraudulent activity. Common methods to detect and prevent fraud in business are studied. Fraudulent financial statements and the misappropriation of assets are considered.
    Prerequisites: ACC 1111
    Motion carries.

Psychology

  1. Course Change: PSY 2201 Tests and Measurements -
    Title change to Psychological Assessment
Prerequisite change: from PSY 1191 to PSY 1101.
