Committee and Other Reports

  A.

Academic Planning (P. Savoye)

Budget committee will meet next week.

B.

Administrative Affairs & Elections (K. Thorne)

The mold in the library is not toxic.
Volunteers are still needed as alternates for committees.

C.

Student Affairs & Admissions (L. Labuski-Brown)

An organizational grid was provided to departmental chairs at the last meeting; faculty can obtain it through their individual department chairs.
The committee discussed whether or not some adaptation in Datatel now exists—or could be created—that would prohibit students with less than 60 of credits from withdrawing from a course without their faculty advisor’s signature. Even though the undergraduate catalog requires a faculty advisor signature, students can and do circumvent the process—thus minimizing the role/importance of the academic advisement in this process (especially at the freshman and sophomore level).

Library Advisory (M. Syrett)

Working on creating a speaker series to celebrate the sesquicentennial and tie it into PA history; also working on grants to fund the series.
Ben Jones has been consulted on the mold in the library.
Report on book circulation and interlibrary loan circulation: MU: per capita did very well in all categories, top in system.
Nov 6: doing a survey, asking about the quality of the library service. All state system schools will be surveyed (a statistician will be doing this) to see how we compare to our peer institutions.

F.

Provost (P. Keller)

PACT Conference: about half of the presidents from other schools are here, some for the 1st time; feedback has been very positive. Their expectations seem to be exceeded. We have rolled out the red carpet; we are representing MU in a positive way. Our own council of trustees has joined the discussion on funding – our trustees have been advocating for funding in a strong way

New Fact book will be available on MY Mansfield.

National Survey of student engagement – MU had higher response rate than most schools (around 68% response rate) – we did not differ from most items from national sample, students responses were similar to public liberal arts institutions.

Seigart: Elementary Ed: congratulations on a successful SPA revision.

Vince: any more talk of webadvisor going back to old system?
Keller: yes, we should have more control; not happy with the current system. There is no easy system.

Judy Bryer is the one to contact if a student disappears.

Persistence rate did go up, but must go up more. Half of our students don’t make it through the system.

Keeth: residence halls are in a terrible state, especially Pinecrest and Cedarcrest – broken furniture, curtains, etc. How does money go towards fixing furniture, foosball tables, pianos not tuned, etc? The state of the dorms is appalling. This should be addressed as it relates to persistence.
Keller: MU owes millions of dollars in debt (bonds) on those buildings. Some of the halls are better than others. The cabinet is committed to improving conditions and there is discussion on how to do that. Trustees have voted that students can move off campus after their 3rd semester. We are living with decisions that were made several years ago. We are trying to convert some space towards the use of commuter students. Some students have reported they are happy with their living space.
Submit problems to Carmen Bianco or Peter Keller.
Timko: furniture problem - when Hemlock was cleaned out some good furniture was thrown out, and some more furniture has been ordered. There is a lack of respect by the students that must be considered.

    PASSED

D. AAC has passed a policy limiting automatic course longevity for students who are readmitted after a more than ten year hiatus:

Course Time Limit

Mansfield University welcomes the return of students who for a variety of reasons have not completed their undergraduate degrees. Courses completed, either at Mansfield or in transfer, more than ten years prior to the date of readmission will not routinely be counted towards graduation requirements. The content of these courses may no longer be current or required for a current degree program. Students may apply, via a petition that includes specific justification for a waiver, to have course work older than ten years applied toward a degree. Any such petition may need to address courses individually. Nothing in this policy precludes a department from establishing more stringent standards.

Discussion: MU needs a policy to deal with students who are returning after many years; their previous coursework may no longer be relevant to their field. Language was carefully chosen in the proposed policy.

Keller: This just provides a guideline for discussion for students who have been out of school for a significant amount of time – this is not a penalty – it is to ensure that our graduating students are up to date and that the degree has integrity.

For students already here, individual departments will be consulted for the few students where this may be a problem.

Registrar now transfers credit, without consulting or getting approval from the department. It is agreed that departments should be consulted.

VOTE:
In favor: 20
Opposed: 6
