Provost (M. Renner)

  • The advertisement for Dean of Faculty position will begin running in the next Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • Provost Renner returned recently from China. Exchange agreements are moving forward. We currently have around 6 students; these are not part of the one-for-one exchange program. We should see our first students in Fall ’08. We are also looking at arrangements with other international universities other than the one-for-one exchange.

Academic Affairs (P. Junius)

1. Course change request: PHL 2350 Philosophy and Popular Culture
Purpose and nature of change: change catalogue description to reflect that course content is variable and that a student could repeat for additional credit.
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Using a variety of contemporary examples and case studies from American culture, which may change from one course offering to the next, the course will demonstrate Philosophy’s relevance in the mainstream popular culture. Course emphasizes development in critical thought, analysis, and communication skills. With instructor’s approval, may be repeated for credit.
T. Murphy moved to insert “Topics in” (2nd Madigan - PASSED)
Topics in Philosophy and Popular Culture.
APPROVED

MOTIONS (2):
2. Course Change Request: Business Internship, BUS 4450
Department: Business & Economics
Purpose and nature of change: Align Internship with new course proposal, Business Practicum, and credit requirements to be offered as an internship.
Old Course Title: Organizational Internship
New Course Title: Business Internship
Course Description for Catalog: Supervised and evaluated participation in the regular activities of a business, government agency, or not-for-profit organization. In consultation with the supervising faculty member, the student is expected to prepare a comprehensive final report relating to the work accomplished during the field experience and have a positive performance evaluation by immediate supervisor. May be taken for 6 through 15 credits. All credits are free electives.
Prerequisites: 60 credit hours earned

3. New Course Request: Business Practicum, BUS 3450
Department: Business & Economics
Purpose and Nature of Course: The course allows students to gain practical experience in business organizations, government agencies or not-for-profit organizations.
Course Title: Business Practicum
Course Description for Catalog: Supervised and evaluated participation in the regular activities of a business organization, government agency or not-for-profit organization. In consultation with the supervising faculty member, the student is expected to document work experience and have positive performance evaluation from immediate supervisor. The course may be taken for 1 through 5 credits. All practicum credits are considered free electives.
Prerequisites: 60 credits earned.

Discussion: Both are taken as free electives – does not count toward their program requirements.
B. Timko – only change is in credit hours. Renner added that an internship is a large scale immersion experience, but practicum is smaller scale, meant for sophomore or junior level. Number of credits is different.
Keller mentioned that students can be approved for up to 15 credits, but only 12 can count toward graduation.
Both APPROVED

MOTION:
4. New Course request: ED/ELE 5571
Department: Education & Special Education

Purpose and Nature of Course: To provide advanced instruction and professional support for individuals who have previously completed a National Writing Project Summer Institute.
Course Title: Endless Mountains Writing Project Advanced Institute
Credits: 3 (Graduate)
To repeat for additional credit (not repeat of previously earned grade), maximum hours of credit that may be earned over multiple Semesters: 6 semester hours.
Course Description for Catalog: Advanced inquiry into the role of the teacher as writer, researcher, change agent and professional leader. Enrollment is by invitation; prior application and interview are required, as is documented completion of a National Writing Project Summer Institute.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of a National Writing Project Summer Institute at an NWP-approved site.
APPROVED

5. Course Change, COM3303
Department: Communication and Theatre
Purpose and nature of change: Elimination of two prerequisites for COM 3303
Prerequisites: Delete COM 3301 and COM 3270 as prerequisites

Discussion:
Name was missing We looked in the Course Catalog and found that COM 3270 is not currently a prerequisite. Another prerequisite that is listed there is not listed as a course!

Motion: to send back to department for clarification (Thorne/Syrett). Passed.

MOTION:
6. New Course, COM3309
Department: Communication and Theatre
Purpose and Nature of the Course: This changing topic course will introduce students to various aspect of Mass Communication study of current interest.
Course Title: Special Topics in Mass Media
Credits: 3 (Undergraduate)
Course Description for Catalog: Specialized study of a topic of current interest in mass media.
Prerequisites: NA
Requested initial date of offering: Summer 2008
Estimated Frequency of Offering: Summers only at this time

Discussion:
The course may be repeated for 9 credits upon permission. Examples: history of ethinic and minority film, gay and lesbian film, film in society…
Keeth – the course description doesn’t make sense, because what is a topic of interest to mass media? Renner – wondered about offering a junior-level course without prerequisites. Brown - doesn’t require any background. Matt Syrett – maybe someone should be here to answer questions.

Motion: to send back (Syrett/Keeth). Passed.

MOTION:
7. Program Change to the Master of Arts in Music.
The music department proposes the creation of an additional emphases under the Master of Arts degree in Music. Currently, the department offers the MA with emphases in music education, instrumental or choral conducting. The proposal is to add an emphasis in collaborative piano and is a direct extension of our change to the MA in music from the former MM in Music Education. The program will utilize the same core courses as the other concentrations under the degree. No new resources are required and only one new course is necessary for the degree. It is expected that this emphasis will draw additional students to the MA in Music degree and expand the departments student enrollment at the masters level.
APPROVED

MOTION:
8. New Course Proposal MAP 6616 Applied Collaborative Piano
would be designated as the applied lessons (one to one instruction)for the students in the collaborative piano track. This distinction is made for accrediting purposes to demonstrate that the issues of collaborative piano work are being addressed. Issues of collaborative piano would be addressed in this setting and would often include not only the piano student in the instructional setting, but other musicians with whom the pianist is accompanying and/or performing. (Students in this emphasis would not take MAP 6610 applied piano). The department has room and need of piano students, so there is no impact to load.

Discussion: This is new course to contribute to program (#7) above.
Question: is description in the agenda the catalog description? No.
APPROVED

VI.

New Business

  • Margaret Launius has withdrawn from the Dean of Faculty search committee and needs to be replaced. Timko recused himself from leading the discussion. Verno took the lead, offering three possible solutions. 1. We could just take next in line from the results from the original election. A. Gaskievicz was next in the results, and is already on the search committee. The next is S. Ramasamy. He agreed to be on the committee, so is a possibility. 2. We could take nominations and have the entire faculty vote electronically. 3. We could simply make an appointment from university senate.

    Discussion:
Thorne – advantage is that they were willing to serve.
Renner – only constraint is that the ad is already out. Reviewing applications starting 11/26. Asks that we move quickly.
Motion: that the senate vote to replace Launius on dean of faculty with next in line (option #1). (Brown/Rashidi)
Junius is next in line if Ramasamy declines, and she is willing to serve.
    PASSED
    • Chair handed back to Timko.
