Academic Affairs (P. Junius)--4 items:

•  New Course: LS 1101

Department: Academic and Human Development

Purpose and Nature of Course: To enhance and facilitate the exploration of career

interests and choices for students who have not yet discovered a college major and career direction.

Prefix: LS 1101 Number: ____

Course Title: Introduction to Career Development

Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule), Maximum 20 spaces

C A R E E R _ D E V E L O P_ M E N T _

Credits (Place number of credits beside appropriate types)

Credit(s) 1 Undergraduate

Credit(s) _____ Graduate

For variable credits, list Minimum Credit _____; Maximum Credits _____

Clock Hours: Lecture 1 Recitation _____ Lab _____

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):

This course is designed to facilitate the exploration of career interests for students who are uncertain of their career direction, as it relates to a choice of college major. The course is also designed to help facilitate student self assessment of talent, skills, and interest. Each student will explore their academic strengths, individual personality traits and develop goals and objectives toward the declaration of an appropriate college major. Real life experiences and work histories will also be analyzed to help discover current and past values, interest(s), and goals.

Prerequisites: (Courses which MUST be completed prior to taking this course) None

Co-requisites: (Courses which must be taken prior to or simultaneously with) None

Courses to be eliminated NA

If none: How will increased offerings be staffed?

New position

Discussion / Questions/Concerns voiced (dialogue condensed):

Q: This is a new position?

B. Chabala: provost indicated a ½ time hire, for 5 week modules (2 quarter time courses).

RT: This is not a liberal studies course, it is more developmental (AHD prefix more appropriate). LS is interdisciplinary study in a scholarly/academic way. This should be more of an 0090 course and not count toward a degree.

BC: this is not remedial. Even high SAT students do not understand the process of exploring their majors. Look at attrition rates of undeclared majors. They need structured opportunity to understand what a career choice is about.

There is enough room in a student's schedule to allow 1 credit free elective.

Q: How is this different than advising? What is the focus of this class?

BC: Difference from other classes and advising is there is not a testing degree in other courses. The field has developed. This course molds discussions and helps students make decisions bases on a broader perspective what an education can be. Prefix suggested by provost.

Provost: Course prefix doesn't make any difference. AHD prefix ok. Having these courses for students who need them is very important. There is room for negotiation how we can get this done.

Q: Will there be enough students to fill: 1 credit, 5 week module, 3 times a semester.

BC: Yes. There should be no problem filling the courses.

Q: how does this fit in with career development office?

VJ: career planning and placement not career development or exploration. This class is doing what that office used to do. This is designed for those who haven't chosen a major or who want to change majors and have never thought about anything else. Many would be served who are not being served now by advising.

Q: How is LS 1101 different from UNV 100.

BC: UNV is broad based and doesn't focus in detail on career.

Q: is this self selected or would all undeclared majors take this.

BC: advisor recommends or freshmen are place based on their interests.

SK: can we make this an AHD prefix?

JM: that would make it a friendly amendment.

Friendly amendment:

Replace LS prefix with AHD, with appropriate number ( Provost: stipulate that it has not been used by that prefix before, may have to change the number.)

•  New Course: LS 1102

Department: Academic & Human Development

Purpose and Nature of Course: To enhance and develop individual learning strategies for success in and out of the classroom. The course will provide a framework for examining and enhancing students' learning through a self-created and values-based approach to life and learning.

Prefix: ___LS__(Liberal Studies)_________ Number: ___1102_____________

Course Title: Learning Strategies for Higher Education

Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule)

LEARNING STRATEGIES

Credit(s) __1___ Undergraduate

Credit(s) _____ Graduate

For variable credits, list Minimum Credit _____; Maximum Credits _____

Clock Hours: Lecture _1_ Recitation _____ Lab _____

Course Description for Catalog:

Designed to enhance and develop learning strategies for creating academic success. Topics will include but not be limited to: meta-cognition, collaborative learning and learning strategies. Students will have the opportunity to directly apply new learning strategies to enhance their current course work.

Prerequisites: __None________

Co-requisites: (Courses which must be taken prior to or simultaneously with) _None_

Courses to be eliminated:

Prefix _____ Number _____

If none: How will increased offerings be staffed?

New position

New faculty resources needed? _ X_ Yes ____ No

Requested initial date of offering __Fall 2008_

Estimated Frequency of Offering: ____Every semester___

Discussion :

Q: what is the difference between this and previous course?

BC: this is more learning strategies based, learning styles. Risk factors for 1 st generation college students: not that they can't learn, but have difficulty sustaining learning. Many don't have the sophistication to understand what college is about and don't know how to start. This course uses learning strategies to understand what the whole higher ed. enterprise is about.

RT: wants AHD. This is even more 0090 appropriate, it was not done pre-college.

CT: agrees, this is remedial. How much is it bad habits, how much 1 st generation? Bad habits keep students from passing her course.

BC: remedial vs developmental. This is neither – as schools more teach toward the test, students think they are learning but instead are just regurgitating info. Risk students need to have structure to learn.

Q: Is there a syllabus saying how this will work in classroom, what students will be doing?

BC: it is in the description - uses current course work. This could work side by side with another course.

MM: how students study in high school is often very different from how they need to study in college. Thinks our students will benefit from this course.

LR: this is 2 quarter time positions, building up to another teaching faculty hire teaching learning skills (AHD)?

Provost: This should be self-generating. Costs are easily contained. We need more personnel in learning support, we should be putting more resources into AHD.

LR: yes, we need more support services but will we have a limit on how many credits can go towards a degree (support learning)

BC: this is just 1 credit, trying to address a need. Does not intend to perpetuate the course.

AHD prefix is acceptable.

Discussion :

Offering this to any minor across campus.

BC: ONLY for liberal studies majors who are precluded from field based work in minor or minors. Cannot repeat this and stay within 24 credits.

BK: what is this about? This course is supervised and applies knowledge but what does it apply it to, an internship?
