BK: is concerned that these students will have no reason to look outside their program for a true General Ed program.

RD: This does follow standard procedure. Group 6 would be satisfied by Watershed Management.

BK: but this all still falls under Geography.

RD: it still meets current rules.

BK: but does this meet the spirit of GenEd at MU?

RD: Reality is this is the only way we can make this program work. All requirements have been met.

SD: this is true of many BS programs. This is a common struggle.

UP: questions how much academic rigor these  classes have, there is nothing like anatomy and physiology?

RD: these are classes that teach HOW to teach these things (rock climbing, mountain biking, etc); they are experiential classes.

RD & WE: these students are entering a very competitive market. The ability to teach these courses is very important.

Q: what is the interest in this program?

RD: there is a lot of interest and excitement! This program is geared towards leadership.

M. Ewing stated that from his talks with other students, believes this program has generated a lot of interest and will attract students.

AM: Wellness courses were not voted upon by GES.

B.     Academic Planning (Werner-Burke) - passed everything just voted on.

C.     Administrative Affairs/Elections (Verno)

  • Eliot is getting fresh air; AC is being installed, not sure when.
  • Allen Hall is out for bid. Project manager in Harrisburg is slowing it down a little because of zoning.
  • Grant Hall architects have been selected. There will be more space for classrooms, new cabinets, exhaust hoods and mechanical upgrades, etc…
  • Elevator in Butler is finished (very nice view!).
  • Next project – water treatment plant solely for MU.
  • Feasibility study underway to get apartment style dorms for our students.

D.     Student Affairs/Admissions (Hoy)

Letter to be sent to S. Davis re: policy of academic dismissal and hearing board that follows. Call is to consider this occurring once a year rather than every semester and that students get more help/intervention to help them succeed.

E.      Information Technology: no report

F.      Library Advisory:  no report

G.     First Year Experience (Verno)

Working on Opening Weekend activities, UNV leaders and Peer Leader applications.

H.     Provost (Laydon) re: $ being returned back to state – half of this $ has been identified. The other half is in process. Think they have identified the rest. They will not jeopardize the students’ learning and wish to continue academic pursuits of tenured faculty. The amount to give back may increase. We don’t know where that will come from…

Retention has become even more crucial. 426 students here have yet to register for the spring – reasons may be that 34 have not had clearance and some are on financial hold. Advisors need to get their advisees down to registrar. Please address this in your departments.

VI.      Adjournment: 5:32 (Evans/Moulton)

Minutes respectfully submitted,
Christine Moulton, Senate Secretary
