As overweight and obesity continue to be the leading preventable causes of death
and disability in the U.S., they are leading priorities for Steps to a Healthier Tioga County. Only one third of Tioga County residents,
including both child and adults, are at a healthy weight. The
Tioga County Partnership for Community Health, through
several of its work groups, is working hard to promote physical activity and
proper nutrition in order to fight the obesity epidemic. These efforts are described in detail in the
report Overweight and Obesity in Tioga County, PA published in May 2003. *An updated Overweight and Obesity Fact Sheet (May 2006) is now available.

Know Your BMI: Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement that is used as a guideline to determine healthy weights for children and adults. Use the BMI Chart to find your BMI. For adults use the chart below to determine your weight status. Because body fat differs in males and females as they mature, BMIs for children are interpreted differently than adults. For boys, ages 2-20, go to http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhanes/growthcharts/set1clinical/cj41c023.pdf for BMI interpretation. For girls, ages 2-20, go to http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhanes/growthcharts/set1clinical/cj41c024.pdf for BMI interpretation.
