2/13/06 - Tioga County Meets Healthy People 2010 for Coronary Heart Disease Death Rate. Healthy People 2010 data released in fall of 2005 by the Pennsylvania Department of Health indicates that from 1999-2003 Tioga County has met and surpassed the national 2010 goal of no more than 166 Coronary Heart Disease Deaths per 100,000 (age-adjusted). Between 1999-2003 Tioga County had an age-adjusted Coronary Heart Disease Death Rate of 165.0 per 100,000. During the same time period Pennsylvania had a rate of 187.2. 2/13/06 - Tioga County Meets Healthy People 2010 Goal for Infant Death Rate. Healthy People 2010 data released in fall of 2005 from the Pennsylvania Department of Health indicates that from 1999-2003 Tioga County has met the 2010 goal with an Infant Death Rate of 4.5 per 1,000 live births. Infant is defined as under one year of age. The state Infant Death Rate has remained steady around 7.2-7.3 for the past several years. View Maternal and Infant Health report.

 

2/13/06 - Tioga County Meets Healthy People 2010 Goal for Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Crash Deaths. Healthy People 2010 data released in fall of 2005 from the Pennsylvania Department of Health indicates that from 1999-2003 Tioga County has met and surpassed the national Health People 2010 goal of no more than 4.0 deaths from Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Crashes per 100,000 occurrences. Between 1999-2003 Tioga County had a rate of 3.9. During the same time period Pennsylvania also reached this goal with an Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Crash death rate of 4.0 per 100,000 occurrences. View Substance Abuse report.

 

2/9/06 - Students Continue to Gain Weight. Additional Tioga County Fit for Life data show that the percentage of overweight and obese students in grades k though 8 is continuing to increase. Additional analysis of these data show that these changes are significant, both by grade level and by year. View Overweight and Obesity report.

Tioga County Meets Healthy People 2010 Goal for Lung Cancer Deaths. Healthy People 2010 data released in fall of 2005 from the Pennsylvania Department of Health indicates that from 1999-2003 Tioga County has met and surpassed the national Healthy People 2010 goal of no more than 44.9 lung cancer deaths per 100,000 (age-adjusted). Between 1999-2003 Tioga County had an age-adjusted Lung Cancer Death Rate of 44.7 per 100,000. Pennsylvania had an age-adjusted Lung Cancer Death Rate of 54.4 during the same time period. 2/6/06 - Smoking Mothers-to-be Continue to be a Threat to Tioga County Infants. In 2003 only 67.5% of pregnant women reported they did NOT smoke during their pregnancy. This would indicate that in 2003, over one-third of pregnant Tioga County women smoked. This is a dramatic decrease from 2002 when 79.3% indicated they did not smoke during pregnancy. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen received by the baby causing it to grow more slowly and gain less weight (March of Dimes). Babies exposed to tobacco in the womb are at a higher risk for perinatal mortality and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). View Tobacco Use report., View Maternal and Infant Health report.
