The Early Childhood and Elementary Education Program is designed to provide students with a foundation in child development and learning, extensive preparation in content subject matter and teaching methodology, and uses of observation and student assessment to guide instructional decision-making. Additional emphasis includes establishing cooperative relationships with families and community resources and developing the important knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are required of early childhood and elementary education professionals.
Completion of the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Program prepares graduates to meet the learning needs of all students and to be successful in diverse modern classrooms. Students also learn to adapt and plan instruction that is based on developmentally appropriate practices and to make effective uses of technology to aid teaching and learning.
Successful graduates of our program are recommended to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Early Childhood and Elementary teaching certification for grades Pre-K-4.
Optional Special Education Certification
The Special Education Certification Program is designed to allow students to teach children in grades K-8 with exceptionalities in the areas of learning and intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism, physical disability, and brain injury.
Completion of the Special Education Certification Program prepares students to work with exceptional individuals through a variety of teaching methods and practicum experiences.
This program provides students who complete the requirements for certification in Special Education with a Pennsylvania Instructional I teaching certificate. This is a second certification which will be in addition to their primary certification in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K-4).
Student Organizations
Our education programs offer plenty of other exciting options for individual enrichment. Mansfield students have tutored children in reading, chaperoned dances for individuals with disabilities, presented their work at conferences, and coached Special Olympics events. These are just a few examples of the many different ways to get involved.
Student Council for Exceptional Children
The Mansfield Student Council for Exceptional Children is dedicated to meeting the needs of its members through:
- Advancing the professional and ethical growth of its members
- Fostering involvement of their membership
- Serving as an advocate for the purpose of enhancing the educational, professional, and life opportunities for individuals with exceptionalities.
It is the mission of the members of Mansfield's Student Council for Exception Children to advocate for individuals with disabilities both in and outside of our community. The members of CEC work to help build acceptance and understanding of exceptional individuals as well as help to integrate university students into activities with exceptional individuals in a fun and relaxed setting.
CEC works towards these goals by holding events in the community. Every semester we hold three dances and three craft nights for individuals with disabilities. We also participate in multiple community service activities and events including fundraising during Mansfield's Heritage Weekend and an autism activism week every April.

While some of Mansfield University's professional degree programs are designed to prepare students to meet Pennsylvania's licensure or certification requirements, these programs are not necessarily compatible with licensure or certification requirements in other states. Students who plan to enroll in Mansfield's degree programs with the intent to pursue licensure or certification in states other than Pennsylvania must be aware of the professional licensure requirements in those states. Current students who are planning to undertake field experiences outside of Pennsylvania should also be aware the requirements of other states. Consistent with federal regulations, Mansfield is making a good faith effort to determine if our academic programs leading to licensure or certification meet the requirements of licensing boards in other states. Doing so requires contacting out-of-state licensing boards and having those boards review Mansfield's program curricula. As information from the out-of-state licensure boards is received, it will be posted on the University Licensure and Certification page.
