Calming the ‘Monkey Mind’: Tips and Tools for Mindfulness and Wellbeing
This session, open to faculty and staff, is designed to help attendees become more aware of mental chatter, also known as “monkey mind,” and its effect on the physical body. By learning a mindfulness practice and being present, we can understand what our body is asking of us and what it needs in order to calm the busy mind. Additionally, adopting methods of self-care to enhance wellbeing will encourage a relaxed body and aid in developing a sense of peace. Attendees will learn to use guided meditation and simple self-care techniques to let go of accumulating stress and reestablish balance in their lives. Our presenters are both members of the JED Core Team:
Melissa Cheese, EdD, has a background in mindfulness practice and specializations in meditation and yoga. As a certified meditation educator, she strives to create a sense of community and sharing through mindful movement.
Kristi Hammaker, MHA, CHES, ACSM-PT is a Health and Wellness Educator and personal fitness trainer who strives to help others adopt healthy behaviors and live a healthy life.

Assessment of Faculty Well-Being at Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Institutions (PASSHE)
In the 2020-2021 school year, PASSHE had approximately 93,700 students enrolled in its 14 campuses. Students are at risk of being negatively impacted if well-being scores of faculties are low. A happy teacher makes a happy classroom. Higher education is changing in what some are calling a “pandemic-to-permanent”. Students want to stay online which is changing classrooms for faculty. Faculty have recently been impacted by the pandemic, working from home, retrenchment, integration, changing technology (synchronous, asynchronous, and hy-flex), and yet, they are tasked with recruiting and retaining students, marketing, web designing, researching, and innovative teaching.
Worker well-being is defined as the quality of life related to the work and non-work environment. In the workplace it is a combination of the physical environment, safety climate, policies, and experiences that help shape the individual. Outside of work, their health status, home, community, and society impact their well-being. This study assessed the well-being of faculty by academic rank, STEM vs. Non-STEM departments, years of teaching, integrating or not, and identified factors that are causing the greatest stressors to faculty based on survey questions.
Discussion will follow presentation of research.
