Insert Field

The most important feature related to Custom Elements is the insertion of field values. The Insert Field dialog is invoked from the Rich Text Editor by clicking the Insert Field button in the editor's toolbar. In the Insert Field dialog box, the administrator can select from a set of available fields. Once a placeholder has been inserted into the rich-text block, it will be replaced with the appropriate data value at page-rendering time.

You can select from a long list of variables that CommonSpot stores related to the current page, user state, security, etc. These values will be rendered at runtime and inserted into the Element for display. If specific output formats are required, then a Field Render Mask can be written for them.

The dialog displays a tree control of expandable/collapsible categories under which various fields are displayed. The administrator can highlight a fields and have that field dropped into the rich text editor as a placeholder for the actual data.

The image below shows an example of the Insert Field dialog, with the Event Custom Element expanded to show its fields. Note that several other categories such as metadata, request, session, and page can be expanded.

In Add Display Template dialog Click on the 'Insert Field' icon present in the RTE toolbar

The administrator simply highlights the desired field and clicks Next to submit the dialog and invoke the appropriate Output Mask dialog, based upon the selected field type.

The Output Mask dialog allows the administrator to choose how the field should be displayed. For example, if the selected field was a date field, the administrator might pick the format in which the date will display.
