America Reads

Program Description

America ReadsThe America Reads Challenge at Mansfield University recruits and trains students to work individually or in small groups with young children. Tutors help students to improve reading skills, become motivated to read, and gain self-confidence as readers. Some of the Mansfield University students are paid through the Federal Work-Study Program while others volunteer their time.

The tutors are placed in elementary schools around the area, in both Pennsylvania and New York. This program provides our education majors with practical classroom experience. All tutors go through two training sessions to help prepare them for the experience.

America Reads tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with children. Activities that tutors might participate in include reading aloud, coaching children as they read aloud, making books, practicing word recognition skills, and practicing phonics skills in meaningful contexts. The primary goal of America Reads tutors is to help students have fun and experience success in learning and reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I do it?

America Reads provides professional work experience in an educational setting. Tutors help the students they work with by giving them focused attention and encouragement. They also help specialists and teachers by giving them extra help.

I am a commuter. Is there a school near my house?

We have many schools that participate in and around this area. There are schools in both Pennsylvania and New York that are willing to participate in the program. The America Reads Coordinator will have a listing of the schools that participate.

How many hours a week will I tutor?

Typically, work-study tutors work 5-10 hours a week, depending upon the amount that is awarded to them. Volunteers usually work 2-6 hours each week.

Could I tutor just a few times?

America Reads is a semester long commitment. The Reading Specialists and teachers arrange their schedules so that you are able to tutor. They are looking for responsible students that are committed to tutoring long-term (at least one semester).
