Geosciences is a broad academic discipline that integrates many of the physical sciences including Geography, Geology, and Watershed Management. It studies the nature of, and relationships between, the natural aspects of our world, and the ways in which human activity influences these relationships. Geoscientists study topics such as current environmental issues, geology, climate and climate change, water quality and availability, landform processes, the use of geographic information systems (GIS), and planning.
Graduates from these programs pursue careers in government, industry, and Non-Government Organizations (NGO's), or continue their education by entering graduate school.

The Geoarchaeology Program is designed to help students acquire practical, field-based skills and knowledge in the Earth Sciences and learn how to use this knowledge to address questions about past environments and past human interaction.
Completion of the Geoarchaeology Program will not only prepare students to work in a wide variety of environmentally related technical careers but also cultural resource management careers. Graduates of this program are expected to find careers in environmental conservation, regulation, and enforcement, and also cultural resource management positions in both private companies and government agencies.
This program provides students with a rigorous training in the fundamental earth sciences, and the application of scientific principles to the analysis of contemporary human-environment interaction and past human-environment interaction.

The Geology Program is designed to help students gain experience in collecting and assessing data in outdoor field locations, the ability to communicate technical data to associates in both oral and written form, and the ability to present and interpret geologic data in maps, charts, and other graphic formats.
Completion of the Geology Program prepares students for a variety of career and post-graduate paths in geological and environmental sciences, business, and education, as well as government and public service. Students graduating with this degree can pursue careers in environmental consulting, geologic engineering, business, mineral resources, and the petroleum industry.
This program provides students with a basic working knowledge of current geologic principles, geologic and geographic data collection methods, basic data assessment and report preparation skills, and hands-on experience in geologic research and professional practices.

The Watershed Management Program is designed to educate students about one of the most important environmental concerns facing the world: water quality and availability. Problems related to water pollution, including agricultural runoff, acid mine drainage, industrial discharge, floods, water shortages, stream restoration, and inadequate sewage treatment, have all become increasingly important.
Completion of the Watershed Management Program prepares students for entry-level positions or for graduate school. As government agencies and private organizations address the ongoing issues that watersheds face, they will need properly trained employees with a strong background in watershed education and management.
This program provides students with a hands-on education in the heart of rural, north-central Pennsylvania. The location of this program is especially convenient as it possesses varying landscapes, multiple water management projects, and a multitude of geologic structures. In other words, Tioga County is an ideal outdoor laboratory for Watershed Management students!

Student Organizations and Opportunities
A crucial part of the student experience in the Department of Geosciences at Mansfield University is the opportunity that students have to collaborate directly with professors on unique and cutting-edge research projects. A number of our students have presented their work at regional and national conferences, and many continue their studies at the graduate level.
We have a few ongoing projects, which are passed on between student leaders from year to year. These projects include the Tioga County Grave Mapping Project, the Abandoned Wells Search, and a number of continuing research projects at the nearby Mill Cove Environmental Area. We also have a number of students working on individual projects of their own design.

While some of Mansfield University's professional degree programs are designed to prepare students to meet Pennsylvania's licensure or certification requirements, these programs are not necessarily compatible with licensure or certification requirements in other states. Students who plan to enroll in Mansfield's degree programs with the intent to pursue licensure or certification in states other than Pennsylvania must be aware of the professional licensure requirements in those states. Current students who are planning to undertake field experiences outside of Pennsylvania should also be aware the requirements of other states. Consistent with federal regulations, Mansfield is making a good faith effort to determine if our academic programs leading to licensure or certification meet the requirements of licensing boards in other states. Doing so requires contacting out-of-state licensing boards and having those boards review Mansfield's program curricula. As information from the out-of-state licensure boards is received, it will be posted on the University Licensure and Certification page.
