CAMPUS SINGERS INVITED TO JOIN FESTIVAL CHORUS

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to sing in the Mansfield University Festival Chorus for the coming academic year.  Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, August 26h at 7 pm in Steadman Theatre.

The Festival Chorus will appear along with the Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, and the Concert Choir in the Annual Choral Collage on Sunday, October 26 at 2:30 pm. The program presents a variety of musical styles including folk and spiritual arrangements.  Our guest composer for the day will be Kenneth Dake, the director of music at New York City’s historic Marble Collegiate Church. There, Ken oversees a multi-choir program known for its extraordinary diversity and musical excellence.  The Festival Chorus will perform his setting of Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing and the Concert Choir will premiere his original composition, Further Goals.

The theme for the trio of holiday choral concerts on December 5, 6, & 7 will be Lo, How a Rose.  Hundreds of musical compositions have references to what some believe is the most perfect flower, including sacred works based upon the scripture, Isaiah 35:1.  The most famous is the Praetorius setting of Lo, How a Rose e’er Blooming.  Craig Hella Johnson has brilliantly woven this melody and text into a beautiful composition that also incorporates the popular song by Amanda McBroom called The Rose, which will be sung by the Festival Chorus. The finale promises to be thrilling with combined choirs, brass, percussion, and organ in a glorious work by Glenn Rudolph, The Dream Isaiah Saw.  A snowy, peaceful backdrop has just been ordered to set the stage for a lovely evening.

The choral literature for the fall semester in Festival Chorus will be:

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing….Tennessee Harmony, arr. Ken Dake

Libiamo ne’ lieti calici (Drinking Song)……………….Giuseppe Verdi

Erev shel shoshanim…………………..Josef Hadar, arr. Jack Klebanow

Sit down servant……………..Traditional Spiritual, arr. Linda Twine

Alleluia……………………………….............…….Paul Basler

There is no rose of such virtue………..……….John Joubert

Lo, how a rose/The rose…………….Craig Hella Johnson

The Dream Isaiah Saw…………….....….Glenn Rudolph

The Festival Chorus meets on Tuesday evenings in Steadman Theatre beginning on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm.  In addition, members are welcome to participate with the Concert Choir on selections for men's and women's choruses.   These rehearsals are held on Thursdays at 7 pm for women and 8 pm for men.  However, singers do not have to participate in the men's or women's choruses in order to be a member of the Festival Chorus.

Music is available for purchase at the campus bookstore in Alumni Hall.  Singers should purchase their packet before the first rehearsal.  For more information, call 570-662-4721.
